FOURTH OF JULY
We wish everyone a happy Independence Day holiday! Consider these important words from first President George Washington’s “Farewell Address”:
“Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports. In vain would that man claim the tribute of patriotism, who should labor to subvert these great pillars of human happiness, these firmest props of the duties of men and citizens. The mere politician, equally with the pious man, ought to respect and to cherish them. And let us with caution indulge the supposition that morality can be maintained without religion.... Reason and experience both forbid us to expect that national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle. ‘Tis substantially true that virtue or morality is a necessary spring of popular government. Who that is a sincere friend to it, can look with indifference upon attempts to shake the foundation of the fabric?”
Yes, let us be conscious of, and speak and act in favor of, religion and morality being necessary supports of our system of popular government. In fact, without a moral consensus–without clarity about what is right and what is wrong–democracy deteriorates into anarchy. May God preserve our republic from such a fate!
SUMMERTIME, AND THE LIVING IS EASY…
Summer often means a slower pace of life, more recreation and vacation–but be sure not to take a vacation from your vocation to be saint! Encountering the Lord through daily prayer, Sunday Mass and frequent Confession should always remain the bases of our spiritual lives. When traveling, find local Mass and Confession times using this convenient website: masstimes.org
Enjoy the Summer, and remember to put Jesus first!
I remain your servant in Christ Jesus,
