Dear Friends,

22 of our high school students, several young adult volunteers, and Fr. Dyer are spending this coming week at the annual diocesan Work Camp, renovating the homes of the needy on Virginia’s Northern Neck. In addition, they have daily Mass, a visit from Bishop Burbidge, Confessions, adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament, as well as fun and games. Please keep them in your prayers. You can also support their good works through financial donations–and consider joining our Work Camp crew next year!...

Congratulations to 31 of our Hispanic children who this weekend receive their First Holy Communion!  May all of us always be faithful to the greatest gift we can receive, the Most Blessed Sacrament of the Lord Jesus’ Body and Blood.

A reminder that we welcome Father Edward Horkan, who will be moving in this week.  He will be studying Canon Law at Catholic University while residing (and helping out) at St. Charles.

Since it’s Summer, I share with you an authentic gazpacho recipe my friend Victoria who grew up in Seville, Spain, where her family ate this as their first course daily at lunch time in the Summer:

  • Ingredients

    • 2 lbs very red tomatoes

    • 1 sm bell pepper (green is traditional, but red, yellow or orange peppers may be substituted)

    • 1 clove garlic

    • 2 tbs vinegar (sherry vinegar, if possible–or red wine vinegar)

    • 1 tbs salt

    • 3/4 cup olive oil

    • 3 slices bread (briefly soak in water, then squeeze out water)

    • 1 med cucumber

  • Blend and chill!

  • Serve with the following garnishes (cubed):

    • Tomatoes

    • Cucumbers

    • Peppers

    • croutons (plain)

  • Serves 4-6

I remain, your servant in Christ Jesus,

Father Don
