Padre's Page - May 13

Dear Friends, here’s what’s up this week:

I am happy to report that the consultation phase regarding a potential parish site redevelopment has concluded and that I have submitted a  report to Bishop Burbidge. The consultation process revealed a consensus that a timely redevelopment of the St. Charles Parish campus would better serve the Church’s mission in general and the parish’s mission in particular.  A strong majority of parish stakeholders, and all diocesan stakeholders, are enthusiastic about the possibilities that a future redevelopment of the St. Charles campus could bring.  Having spent ten months soliciting broad feedback from representative parishioners and diocesan officials, according to the plan approved by Bishop Burbidge, I am confident that there is a great desire to redevelop the St. Charles Parish site, and therefore have requested that Bishop Burbidge formally approve further redevelopment efforts.  For more information, see our website under “News and Events–Parish Redevelopment.”

This Monday, May 14, Jim Schuster will conclude our series with a talk on “The Supernatural Destiny of Man” at 8:00 P.M. in Benedict Hall.  Join us for this inspiring talk about how we are sanctified by God and empowerd to share in his mission.

We’re looking to hire a new Business Manager, who helps the Pastor with the administrative and financial management of the parish, and to hire a new Rectory Cook to help nourish our priests!  For more information, please see our ads at:

This Tuesday, May 15 marks my 25th anniversary of ordination to the priesthood, thanks be to God!  I would be very grateful, please, for:

  •  your prayers for my growth and perseverance and growth in holiness and in zeal;
  • a donation of $25 (in honor of my 25th!) from every parishioner to Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Arlington through Faith Direct–you can do so through the link on our website under Support/Give.

While unworthy of the honor, it has been a great blessing and joy to serve as a priest for a quarter century, including for six years (1993-1995, 2014-2018) at St. Charles!  Thanks for your wonderful collaboration and support!

This Saturday, May 12, our second grade children received their First Holy Communion, and this coming Friday, May 18, our seventh graders will receive the sacrament of Confirmation.  Congratulations to all of them!  Please pray that they continue to grow in grace.

I remain, your servant in Christ Jesus,

Father Don

A letter from Bishop Burbidge:

“Dear Father Planty,

I was delighted to learn that the Parish of Saint Charles Borromeo has recently paid off their loan with DIAL Corporation. Congratulations to you and the parish community for having the discipline and fortitude to bring your debt to conclusion. I understand that this is the first time the parish has been debt free since September of 2003, and that the outstanding principal balance amounted to $2.2 million at one point.

Please know of my sincere gratitude for your pastoral leadership, as well as my appreciation for the stewardship of the resources entrusted to the parish by the faithful.”
