• Fair Trade Sale Raises $10,000 for Needy Overseas
  The Fair Trade Sale in Benedict Hall on Dec. 8-9, which featured goods from 16 different developing countries, raised over $10,000 for HandCrafting Justice, a project of the Sisters of the Good Shepherd. 80-90 percent of these funds go directly to the women and communities who worked on the goods. • Giving Tree Produces 2,000 Gifts
  On Dec. 14-16, the Giving Tree Committee and more than 100 volunteers sorted, packed and distributed over 2,000 gifts in addition to $13,000 in gift cards (for clothing and food) to families, individuals and organizations in our community. Your response to the Giving Tree requests was beyond generous and at times overwhelming. You have made this Christmas a little brighter for many children and families. Thank you, Gracias.

  David Kimble, husband of Evelyn Kimble and father of seven boys, died on Monday, October 29.  Long-time parishioners of St. Charles, all of the children were baptized and confirmed at St. Charles.  Most have settled in the Northen Virginia area. His funeral is Monday, November 5 at 10:30 AM. His wake is at Murphy's Funeral Home (Wilson Blvd.) on Sunday, November 4 from 5 to 8 PM.

• Fri., Aug. 31 -Funeral for Albert Gregory McCarthy III, 75, who died Aug. 28. He was a lawyer and real estate developer who ran a family charity, the Loyola Foundation for Catholic Charities. The foundation gave away more than $40 million to 5,000 Catholic missionaries over the past 50 years. He was the husband of parishioner Jane McGinnis McCarthy. Friends may call at Murphy Funeral Home of Arlington (4510 Wilson Blvd.) from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM on Thursday, Aug. 30. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Charles on Friday, Aug. 31 at 10:30 AM. Interment at Fairfax Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to Capital Hospice or the Loyola Foundation, 308 C St., NE, Washington, DC 20002 for distribution to Mr. McCarthy's favorite charities.
  
  From the Washington Post: "He was certainly serious about carrying out what he saw as the Christian mission to help those around the world who have so much less than we do here, but he also had a great sense of humor. He took joy in living and wanted to share his good fortune and the resources of the foundation," said Rev. Allen Novotny, president of Gonzaga College High School.
  
  
• Support Earthquake Victims in Peru
  In response to the devastation and loss of life resulting from the recent 8.0 magnitude earthquake in Peru, Catholic Relief Services (CRS) is rushing to assist the 85,000 people affected by the earthquake with donations of food, medical equipment, shelter and other essential materials. St. Charles will take up a special second collection on Sunday, Aug. 26, which will go to these relief efforts. For parishioners who would like to give on their own, donations can be made online at www.crs.org,

• St. Charles School Needs Plain White Paper
  As announced at Mass, the school is short on plain white paper for the coming school year. Please consider donating a ream of new, plain white copy/multiuse paper for our students. Drop off your donations when you come to Mass.
  
  
• Sat., Aug. 25 - Memorial Mass for Gary Stevens, a long-time parishioner, at 10:30 AM. He is survived by his wife Maryann, two brothers (Paul and Donald), three children (Pamela, David, and parishioner Melissa Stevens Crowley) and seven grandchildren. He was head of advertising for the Postal Service, an avid golfer, and was deeply loved by his family, who were greatly influenced in their lives by his generous example and "gentle soul".

  Sept. 28, 1911 - June 9, 2007. Her funeral is Saturday, June 23 at 11 AM. Burial following Mass at National Memorial Park Cemetery.
  
  She moved here in the 1930s from South Dakota to work for the US government. Originally a member of St. Charles, she later moved and was a member of St. Ann's. Most recently she lived at Brighton Gardens, and was visited by St. Charles priests and Eucharistic Ministers.

Diane Herbst Passed Away
Parishioner Diane Herbst died after a long bout with cancer. Please pray for Diane, her husband Tom, and their two children. The wake is Sunday, January 28 from 2-4 PM (Fr. Creedon plans to hold a brief wake service at 3 PM) and 6-8 PM at Murphy's Funeral Home. The funeral is Monday, January 29 at 11 AM here at St. Charles with Fr. Clement as the celebrant.
