St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church is a very large parish that places a high priority on Social Justice. Although this mission demands much work to promote long-term justice, it also means we must tend to those who have needs in this moment. St. Charles seeks two individuals to implement our Social Justice programs:

The Social Justice Coordinator supports 34 ministries focused on various social justice themes. The ministries are categorized under the rubrics of Global Solidarity, Advocacy, Community Organizing, and Education and Formation. These ministries are represented by the Social Justice Committee on which sit liaisons and representatives from the various ministries.

The Social Services Coordinator supports 14 ministries focused on various direct Social Services. These ministries are represented by the Social Justice Committee on which sit liaisons and representatives from these ministries.

Social Justice Coordinator Responsibilities

  • Guiding and Supporting the Social Justice Representatives and Liaisons to the Social Justice Committee in the following areas:
    • Social Justice Teachings
    • Knowledge of important Web sites
    • Information for parish website
    • Liturgical connections to issues/themes of social justice
    • Current events connected to social justice ministries
    • Diocesan Events relative to social justice ministries
    • Volunteer formation
    • Publicizing information and events
    • Budgeting
  • Establishing a schedule with the Pastor to alternate attendance at monthly meetings of the following committees:
  • St. Charles Advocacy Committee
    St. Charles Respect Life
    St. Charles JustFaith
    St. Charles Just Neighbors
    St. Charles Africa AIDS Outreach
    St. Charles Dominican Republic
    St. Charles Haiti Committee
    St. Charles Latinos Unidos
    St. Charles PMM (Philippine Medical Mission)
    AIC (Arlington Interfaith Council)
    AHS (Alliance for Housing Solutions)
    ANDC (Arlington New Directions Coalition)
    APAH (Arlington Partnership for Affordable Housing)
    BRAVO (Buyers and Renters Advocacy Organization)
    CCHD (Catholic Campaign for Human Development)
    IAF (Industrial Areas Foundation - community organizers)
    SALT (Social Action Linking Together)
    Unite Here (union organizers)
    VICPP (Virginia Interfaith Committee)
    PAX Christi

  • Attending local meetings and events relative to the Social Justice ministries of St. Charles (such as peace march, PSALM, Advocacy Days (Catholic & Ecumenical), Events sponsored by Our Lady Queen of Peace, and others)
  • Performing General Administration:
    • Compile/Update Annual/Monthly Calendar relative to Social Justice Committees
    • Assist ministries with submission of Annual Budgets
    • Assist with Semi-annual Social Justice Meetings
    • Produce regular Parish website input
    • Submit monthly reporting to parish council liaison
    • Maintain Database of Volunteer data
    • Update and Maintain Social Justice Guide book as needed
    • Assist in Coordination of all Social Justice Ministry events as needed

  • Coordinating the Monthly Social Justice Newsletter
  • Working with Tithe Committee to establish annual tithe schedule, publicize schedule and information about recipients.
  • Meeting the special needs of these ministries/events:
    • Volunteer Dinner
    • Weekly Ministry Tables, Bulletin Board displays
    • International Festival
    • Haiti Carnaval
    • Volunteer Fair

Qualifications: solid theological background, experience in advocacy, sound organizational, communication, relationship building and computer skills.

Social Services Coordinator Responsibilities

  • Administering and carrying out Project Lazarus (our emergency assistance program):
    • Manage Walk-ins, Phone calls, Client Interviews
    • Investigate client cases with other agencies, utility companies, medical providers and property managers
    • Fund Raise for individual clients
    • Fund Raise for Project Lazarus
    • Manage Pledges and Payments (requests, returns, corrections and tracking)
    • Maintain our Client Database
    • Perform Volunteer recruitment and training
    • Submit Bulletin announcements
    • Network with local agencies and churches
    • Make Home visits as needed
  • Coordinating the Food Pantry
  • Submitting Bulletin announcements for donations, thank yous and parish reporting
  • Ensuring necessary bagging, stocking, tracking of food
  • Coordinating volunteers
  • Coordinating Donations
  • Storage, distribution, writing receipts/thank you notes, handling walk-ins and phone calls, and maintaining Reference list
  • Meeting special needs of these Ministries/Events:
    • Turkey Day, Giving Tree, Crop Walk, Cereal Drive, Fair trade coffee day, International Festival, ESL, Borromeo Housing, Meals on Wheels
  • Performing General Administration:
    • Annual/Monthly Calendar relative to Direct Service Ministries
    • Annual Budgets
    • Assist with Semi-annual Social Justice Meetings
    • Parish web site input
    • Reporting to parish council
    • Attend monthly meetings of Direct Service Ministries
    • Maintain local contact list for jobs, budgeting, apartments, legal assistance, etc.
    • **Attend professional social work seminars as possible
  • Guiding the Direct Service Representative(s) to the Social Justice Committee in the following areas:
    • Social Justice Teachings
    • Knowledge of important Web sites
    • Information for parish Web site
    • Liturgical connections to issues/themes of direct service ministries
    • Current events and Advocacy efforts connected to direct service ministries
    • Diocesan Events relative to direct service ministries
    • Volunteer formation
    • Publicizing info and events
    • Budgeting
  • Helping publicize information about the services and special events of Direct Service Ministries Affiliated with St. Charles such as:
    • OAR, AFAC, A-SPAN, Catholics for Housing, AACH, Hogar Hispano, Office of Resettlement, Clarendon House

Qualifications: solid theological background, computer literacy, skilled in administration, communication, and relationship building, have an understanding and/or willingness to learn local issues such as affordable housing, wages, challenges to immigrants, health care issues, some background in Catholic Social Teaching important, able to communicate in Spanish.

Benefits: Each position is a 30 hours (across 5 days) per week position and is considered full time. In addition to salary, we provide a full benefits package of insurance and vacation time.
