St. Charles Website Survey Results from 2003

In June of 2003, the Web Team surveyed visitors to the parish site. The results are shown below.
1. Which St. Charles weekend Mass do you usually attend?
5 PM Vigil on Saturday 9.2% (7)
7:30 AM on Sunday 7.9% (6)
9 AM on Sunday 21.1% (16)
11 AM on Sunday 36.8% (28)
1 PM on Sunday (0)
6 PM on Sunday 18.4% (14)
Usually attend Mass elsewhere 6.6% (5)
Don't generally attend anywhere (0)
TOTAL 100.0% 76

The responses roughly corresponded to participation in the English language Masses, with the exception of the Vigil Mass.

2. What is your age?
Under 20 (0)
20s 18.4% (14)
30s 43.4% (33)
40s 14.5% (11)
50s 10.5% (8)
60s 10.5% (8)
70s 1.3% (1)
80 or greater (0)
None of your darn business 1.3% (1)
TOTAL 100.0% 76

Parish website users do not reflect the lower and upper ranges of parishioners.

3. Which St. Charles Neighborhood do you live in?
Neighborhood A/B (landmarks are Iwo Jima and Courthouse) 10.5% (8)
Neighborhood C (landmark is St. Charles) 2.6% (2)
Neighborhood D (landmark is Arlington Central Library) 9.2% (7)
Neighborhood E (landmark is Arlington Arts Center) 3.9% (3)
Neighborhood F (everywhere else) 55.3% (42)
Not sure 6.6% (5)
Not a member of any St. Charles Neighborhood 11.8% (9)
TOTAL 100.0% 76

Neighborhood F makes up a similar percentage of parishioners as participated in the survey.

4. How often do you usually visit the St. Charles website?
Once a day or more 5.3% (4)
One or more times a week 22.4% (17)
A few times a month 46.1% (35)
Once a month or less 22.4% (17)
This is my first time 3.9% (3)
TOTAL 100.0% 76

We saw a bell curve here for frequency of visits to the site. An announcement that's on the home page for a couple of weeks will reach the majority of visitors.

5. Which features do you regularly look at nearly every time you visit this site? [check all that apply]
Home Page 71.1% (54)
News page and list of new additions to the site 35.5% (27)

Volunteer opportunities 18.4% (14)
Calendar 38.2% (29)
Bulletins 19.7% (15)
Celebrant's schedule 67.1% (51)
Fr. Creedon's homily transcripts 19.7% (15)
C'YA (young adults) 19.7% (15)
Links to other sites 2.6% (2)
Information in Spanish (0)
Other: (fill in the blank) (0)
    -Frequently Asked Questions 1.3% (1)
-if I lived here probably all 1.3% (1)
    -lector schedule 1.3% (1)
    -not a regular visitor 1.3% (1)
    -school 1.3% (1)
    -SOCIAL JUSTICE MINISTRY 1.3% (1)

We anticipated spotting trends in the subsets of information that visitors use, but the results ended up reflecting overall traffic patterns. For example, the homepage gets the most hits followed by the celebrant's schedule--and these were the same results reported here. We didn't find any differences across groups in which areas are visited most frequently..

6. What would you like to see added to the site or changed?
(A summary of responses is below the charts.)

7. Which Ministries or St. Charles Neighborhood are you a volunteer with? (If none, enter "N/A".)
40 = 1 or more Ministries/Neighborhoods (individual responses not shown here)
36 = N/A or none

  1 or more   = 40 53%
N/A or none = 36 47%

8. [Optional] Any other comments you'd like to share with the Web Team?
Highlights are available below.

Summary of Responses from Questions 6 and 8 and the Web Team's Response

What You Said You Wanted to See... How We're Responding...
  • Site map
  • Overall I think the site could benefit from better layout and organization.

A site map is now available.

A majority of those who commented on the layout gave favorable reviews. We think the site map helps to give a good overview of how the site is organized.

  • I rely solely on the web site and e-mail alerts to the C'YA list to fit holy-day worship and other special events into my busy schedule. It works, and it's more time-efficient than trying to stay on top of the bulletin every week. If the bulletin were online, then it would be around on the occasions that I needed it, and I'd get some good from it.
We moved up links to "favorites"--including the bulletin--to the top of the homepage in late 2003 to make this feature more obvious. And bulletins are now available on the mobile/PDA version of the site.
  • Review entire site to update where necessary, like when ministry leaders changed months ago.Not of much value now. Where are the current liturgy schedules? Take responsibility of contacting appropiate people in timely fashion.
  • Some of the pages need updating -- like the staff listing,
  • Update more frequently
  • Delete the old stuff
In 2003, we reviewed the site more frequently to check for information that needs updating. We also added a feedback form to the homepage and to the bottom of many other pages for those who wanted to submit updates other than by emailing webteam@stcharleschurch.org. With the site over 1,000 pages and around 100 ministries and groups, we rely on ministry leaders, staff and visitors to the site to let the Web Team know of new information or changes in contact information.
  • Better info on marriage prep
  • I would consider adding a doc link to the hand out they give engaged couples at the engaged couples orientation meeting. I think that might help people getting married. Also some more additions to the FAQ related to weddings might cut down on questions asked to Tricia.
One of our 2003 goals is to develop a comprehensive checklist. For now, there's some overall marriage information and an expanded marriage ministry section
  • Maybe a blurb on how to become a member of St. Charles parish.
We've added a join the parish page with basic information about joining. The parish office chooses not offer online registration at this time however.
  • Get an email address for Fr. Mendez posted under the clergy part of the website.
Fr. Mendez prefers the parishoffice@stcharleschurch.org address.
  • I feel uncomfortable with "ratings" - as in a pastor's homily , that I once noticed on site. Perhaps instead if there was just a way to do comments now and then that could be useful. thanks to all who work on this most impressive website.

The ratings were added with Fr. Creedon's permission, but were later discontinued due to lack of participation. We subsequently added an instant poll on a topic related to the survey, but this feature was also was infrequently used--except notably on a poll about war in Iraq--and thus discontinued.

We also added a feedback form to the homepage and the bottom of many other pages.

  • I think it may be inspirational to have comments from people who have just received Sacraments. Like parents or godparents after a baptism; some statements from children after their 1st Penance and 1st Communion; a few from teenagers after their Confirmation. And let's not forget about the adults who receive sacraments throught RCIA, or like this past week the adult confirmandi. And a few couples who have recently been married. A couple of the people in the parish who have received Annointing of the Sick. And maybe we can scour up one or two folks who have received Holy Orders.
We agree. The Web Team would love to have such comments available for posting and have requested the ministries to use such an approach. Any such reflections can be submitted to webteam@stcharleschurch.org.
  • More info. on the progress of the Community Center Project.
  • More details about the new construction - schedule, progress reports, diagrams, photos, etc.
We agree, but the Committee has preferred to use the bulletin as the primary means for communications.
  • personalization--- i.e., "my StCharles" more dynamic content (e.g., Catholic newsfeed from other sites )

A slight degree of personalization is available to those using the mobile/PDA version of the site, where you can choose which features you'd like to have on your handheld device.

We don't have enough different types of content or the capacity to offer more dynamic content at this point, although we're experimenting with headlines from Zenit.org.

  • Mass schedule on Home page (with Language) Parish Map (street map)

The Mass schedule with language has been on the homepage since day one. We switched its location later in 2003 to make it more evident.

The parish map and directions page, also available for years, has been redesigned and made more prominent on the homepage.

  • More pictures of parish events (suggested by several parishioners)
We increased the number of photos from 2003 over what was available in 2002 and hope to have even more in 2004. We're also requesting digital photos through the volunteer newsletter so we can continue to add new photos.
  • Search engine
See help/search. We've experimented with two different search engines and are currently using Google on the site.

General Comments
  • I really LOVE this website. Even though I don't visit it often, it ALWAYS has the answers I am looking for when I DO visit the page. It is so well-maintained and organized. You guys have the best website of almost any Catholic church. I also follow the websites of [---] (my parents' parish) and [----] (where I sometimes go to Mass as well) and this is the most updated site by FAR.
  • You're providing a great service. I'm just grateful you provide it.
  • Again, thank you for providing such a wonderful service to our parish community.
  • Although I'm bias, keep up the good work. I've looked at other parish websites, I think stcharleschurch.org is one of the best. I've looked at parishes from where I grew up [---] and either the parish doesn't have one or it's poorly constructed. And that may be one of the reasons why the dynamic of high young adults attendance is high at St. Charles while it falters at other churches. We linked stcharleschurch.org to our website when we were getting married and I had received many positive comments from family members. I think they were jealous!
  • Bravo, web team! Thank you for your dedication to this site. It's filling out nicely. There is a great deal of useful, current info here thanks to your hard work and persistence. You're the best.
  • Keep up the great work! Your website is how I found St. Charles. This website gives an accurate feel for the wonderful community at St. Charles.
  • Generally, I think the Team has done a great job. Recently, my brother-in-law, who lives in the [---] area looked at the site and was quite impressed, especially since we are a relatively small parish and his is several times as large with no web site.
  • This is a great church website, I can tell that a lot of effort goes into making it a great outreach tool. For someone who would like to get a "feel" for St. Charles, the website does a great job of capturing it. Keep up the good work.
  • We were visiting & enjoyed worshipping with you. what a vibrant community you seem to have--keep it up. the Lord must be pleased to see people using the gifts He has given each. God Bless everyone.
  • Web Team: You people do a great job, and a great service to the parish. I also know it's a ton of work, often thankless. I hope the people in the parish office understand both how much effort you're putting in to the web site, and the huge convenience it is for parishioners.
  • I can't think of anything! The site is great!
  • I like the site as is.
  • I love the website and think it's a wonderful resource - great job!
  • I think it is a great site. Very informative.
  • it's fine the way it is
  • Site is excellent! Keep up the great work.
  • Think it's great as is, thanks!!
  • This site is great -- there are so many things that have been added over the years, it's hard to think of new additions. Keep up the good work!
  • Great job!
  • I like being able to see the homilies
  • I think you all do a great job bringing together various facets of our church community. Well done!!!
  • Keep up the good work!
