"Remember, Celebrate, Act!"
An Interfaith Prayer Service Honoring the Life and Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

INTERFAITH PRAYER SERVICE TO HONOR DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.

"Remember, Celebrate, Act!" an interfaith prayer service honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., will be held on Monday, January 20, 2003, at 7:30 p.m. at Mount Olivet United Methodist Church (UMC), 1500 N. Glebe Road in Arlington. The event is free and open to the public.

The purpose of the gathering is to demonstrate that people of many faith traditions can come together in prayer and respect for each other as children of God. The event also seeks to highlight the essential messages of Dr. King--peace, nonviolence, racial and religious harmony-that are so important to America, and indeed the world, in these difficult days.

The prayer service brings together clergy members and faith community representatives from the Baha'i, Baptist, Episcopal, Islamic, Jewish, Lutheran, Roman Catholic and United Methodist traditions. Speakers include: The Reverend Nancy Childress, Associate Pastor of Mount Olivet UMC, Reverend Gerry Creedon, Pastor of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, Chairman of the Peace and Justice Commission of the Catholic Diocese of Arlington and Chairman of the Virginia Interfaith Center for Public Policy, and Reverend Leonard Hamlin, Sr., Pastor of Macedonia Baptist Church.

In addition, Mount Olivet UMC's "Arise" Youth Choir and the Macedonia Gospel Choir are scheduled to perform.

A reception with light refreshments follows the program.

The event sponsor, the Interfaith Committee of Greater Arlington, is comprised of volunteers from 12 local congregations that originally came together in the summer of 2002 to plan an evening of reflection and prayer on the one-year anniversary of the September 11 attacks. The sense of community and fellowship that grew from the Committee's shared experience led to the decision to continue to foster understanding through further interfaith activities.
