Fr. Chuck Speaks About Love to 100s at Local Pub
Photos from the Event
Fr. Chuck McCoart, director of Catholic Charities and a resident of St. Charles, captured the imagination of 100s of young adults at Whitlow's on Wilson on Tuesday, February 13. His talk, "That's Amore," was one of a six-pack of presentations sponsored by the Arlington Diocese's Theology on Tap program. Fr. Chuck's enthusiastic and genuine way of speaking made it easy for the crowd to listen reverently about the celestial celebration everytime a seeking person comes home to God. He echoed a theme we have been privileged to hear many times at St. Charles, which is that we are all seeking and reaching for something, but that we will only be satisfied when we reach for God.

One attendee commented, "When he closed in prayer, it was truly touching to see all these young adults out at a pub/restaurant on a Tuesday evening bowing their heads in prayer. We were encouraged that so many people would choose to spend their time quenching their thirst for holiness in this way."

Fr. Gerry Responds to Bizarre Exchange in Wash. Post Magazine
On December 2, the Post ran an abbreviated version of Fr. Gerry's letter below. His complete text is here.
Dear Editor,
The article by Gene Weingarten in Sunday Oct 9 Washington Post Magazine captured the spirit of an enjoyable outing I had with Rabbi Weinblatt, Rev. Mosby and Mr. Weingartner at Avenel at the Post's expense. Our friendship, camaraderie and conversation were an illustration of strangers meeting and celebrating their cultural and religious differences as well as their shared ministry and values.

However you described my attitude to golf better than my attitude to God, especially for people who believe everything they read in a newspaper! I refer to the exchange on salvation where I am quoted "In the end he seems to be saying that there may be room in heaven for the rabbi, but it's not crystal clear". My view of God is more generous and unconditional than this jocose response, that I do not recall giving, suggests. Considering what is happening by way of religious intolerance in the North of Ireland and in Jerusalem these days, I want to be crystal clear that salvation is available for all of us who "do the will of the Father". His will includes the elimination of every form of bigotry and intolerance even in jest. With representatives of the three major religions who form part of the Virginia Interfaith Center for Public Policy, which I chair, we seek a more just and tolerant Old Dominion.

Rev. Gerry Creedon

The October 7, 2000, Washington Post Magazine article referenced here included the following quote:

"In the end he [Creedon] seems to be saying there's room in heaven for the rabbi, but it's not crystal clear."

but Fr. Gerry refutes this exchange.

Fr. Joe Hacala on Bishop's Pastoral, Faithful Citizenship, Oct. 2
Fr. Joe Hacala presented the “political responsibilities of the Christian” on Monday, Oct. 2 before an audience of 35 at St. Charles.

The US Bishops recently released the pastoral letter, Faithful Citizenship: Political Responsibility for the New Millennium, which Fr. Joe said we should read and pray over. He stated that politics is “an opportunity”—not a burden—and “an obligation for us.” The Bishops call us to be involved in elections and throughout the year. Citizenship is a virtue.

According to Fr. Joe, the Bishops outline several principles in Faithful Citizenship:

As Catholics, we enjoy 3 major assets:

  • Consistent moral framework—gift of our Faith and Tradition
  • Broad experience of service—we have a long and strong record
  • Broad cross-section of members—we attract a variety of people from all walks of life

By drawing on these assets, we are called to do the following:

  1. Education
  2. Discernment—root out evil, lift up the good
  3. Participation
  4. Witness as apostles

The Bishops explain moral principles and priorities for public life as:

  1. Protect human life across the board
  2. Promote family life
  3. Pursue social justice
  4. Promote and practice global solidarity

Fr. Joe and participants agreed that there are no easy answers and no candidates or parties that support all Catholic teachings. As we participate in public life, we need ongoing discernment as we steep ourselves in the Holy Spirit of God who brings justice.

During the discussion period that followed the lecture, participants explained how they felt torn between being pro-life and pro-poor. Others pointed out the importance of local action and involvement. Members of the disabled community shared their first-hand experiences at area shelters and emphasized how faith-based and private organizations serve the needy more effectively than government-based organizations.

The conversations will continue, including at the Vote 2000 Election Workshop on Sunday, October 22 from 3 to 6 pm at St. Charles.

Fr. Joe works at HUD now, but also ministered in Appalachia for 9 years and spent 5 years as Director of the Campaign for Human Development.

Fr. Chuck McCoart, who is in residence at St. Charles, mentioned some books in recent homilies that some of you asked about. At the September 10 Masses, he discussed the following book:

The God You're Looking For
by Bill Hybles

At the July 23 Masses, he read an excerpt from:
Against an Infinite Horizon: The Finger of God in Our Everyday Lives
by Ronald Rolheiser.

Towing Enforced During Weekdays
Please be sure to request a temporary parking pass from the parish office when you're using the lot during school days. Unauthorized vehicles will be towed by Frank's Towing. This new policy will protect the schoolchildren who use the parking lot for exercise.

During School hours, you must obtain a temporary parking pass from the parish office or your vehicle will be towed by Frank's Towing Service. Parish staff and the School's teachers will be issued parking decals. There are not enough spaces to allow permanent parking to parents or parishioners, but temporary passes will be available on a limited basis.

These changes will enhance the safety of our school children on their playground. Please remember to obey the speed limited of 5 miles per hour. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
