A Mary Prayer Guide

by Jean Sweeney

Individuals or even Gathering groups/prayer groups may want to use this guide during May. Read each section aloud, slowly. Participants should be seated and may close their eyes if they desire.

In the Catholic Church, May is traditionally a month to honor Mary. As children, we had May processions and songs to crown the Blessed Mary with flowers. As adults we come to see Mary as the first of disciples, one who lived in union with God, finding God’s will in all things. Here are some of Mary’s words from Scripture. Let this be a guide to your own praying and living this May.

How can this be...?   (Luke 1:34)

Let come to mind a situation/relationship that is difficult to make sense of in your life and ask Mary’s question. Then ask Mary’s question with her confidence. Ask it with a "Mary stance" of expectancy, and openness that God WILL enter this particular situation. "How will you be working this out, O God, how can this be---what will it look like?"

I am the servant (handmaid) of the Lord. Let it be done to me as you say.   (Luke 1:38)

Think about situations in your life where you want things done a certain way. Could you allow room for another way? God’s way? Perhaps to give up some control? Try out " Let it be done to me as you say" in your prayer. Wonder about God’s will for a particular unhealed relationship or situation.

My soul magnifies the Lord; my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.    (Luke 1:46)

Think about what you rejoice in. Make a list. Give thanks. Receive God’s reflection in you as Mary did, perhaps you, too, will "magnify" the Lord.

Why have you done this? We’ve been searching for you.   (Luke 2:48)

Mary asks Jesus her questions. Do you need to ask Christ your questions? Will you trust him with your wondering? Be who you are, and tell him how it is. Wait in Silence. Some things need to be pondered in one’s heart.

They have no wine.   (John 2:3)

Mary sees what others need. Think of the needs of those others in family, work, and the world. Mention them to God.

Do whatever he tells you.   (John 2:3)

Mary is sure of God’s way in all things. She knows that Jesus will meet the need. Reflect on your own faith. Ask that it be strengthened.
