Freedom: Parishioner Reflections on the Jubilee

...We have been created with a free will and should use it to make choices for God.

freedom In frustration with this summer’s drought I asked myself why the early settlers didn’t go back to Europe when they saw what it was like here. Were they afraid of getting seasick again? No, they came here to obtain religious and economic freedom. At least after the revolution, America was very good to them, and has been to us, too. It continues to attract new immigrants for the same freedoms.

However, freedom can be a two-edged sword. The First Amendment to our Constitution is designed as a bulwark of our liberty by ensuring free speech in its defense. Satan seems to have seized on the First Amendment as an excuse to gradually flood our country with salacious and pornographic material in magazines, books, television and motion pictures; to attack the young and lead them away from God. Satan has also corrupted God’s commandment not to kill by introducing the bogus concept, freedom of choice, as an excuse to kill innocent babies. Our state and national leaders often are on the wrong side of these issues. We must not allow the guarantors of our freedom to be used as instruments of our destruction. We have been created with a free will and should use it to make choices for God.

Prayer:
Lord, help us to find ways to reduce the immorality that we find around us and to restore a true freedom in our land.

Richard Munly
