Liturgy of the Word with Children
During the 9:00 and 11:00 a.m. Masses, children gather in the Upper Room to read and talk about the Sunday Scriptures. Children are dismissed at the beginning of Mass and return during the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Germaine Leahy

Catechesis: Sacramental Preparation

   
First Eucharist / First Reconciliation
Children preparing to receive these sacraments are enrolled either in Atrium or Grade-based catechesis. Children are required to have at least one full year of catechesis prior to the scholastic year during which they will receive the sacraments. Specific preparation for the sacraments takes place during the second year of catechesis through parent meetings, additional child gatherings, and a small retreat. Andrea Bender

Rite of Christian Initiation with Children
(RCIC)
RCIA supports family centered initiation into the Catholic community for childrena and families. Family members join appropiate age groups for their main catechesis (RCIA, WAY, On The Way, Atrium, Grade-based, Catholic School, etc.). The RCIC community meets once a month on Saturday evenings to prepare to receive the sacraments of initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and / or Eucharist). Andrea Bender

On The WAY
(Junior High)
On The Way is dedicated to the spiritual and moral development of the parish’s seventh and eighth grade youth. On The Way provides a safe and caring environment in which young adolescents learn to apply the teachings of the Catholic Church to their everyday lives by participating in recreational activities, service projects and religious instruction. WAY
(Senior High)
WAY seeks to initiate and deepen relationships between young people while advancing their understanding of the Catholic faith. Adult volunteers facilitate this program for high school youth that combines catechesis with community service and social activities. (Grades 7 - 12)
Young people who desire to complete the initiation process into the Catholic Church through Confirmation are enrolled in On The Way (grades 7-8) or WAY (grades 9-12). Jr. High Workcamp
Rising seventh, eighth and ninth graders spend three days in July volunteering at local agencies that help the hungry, homeless, elderly and others with special needs. During the evening, they participate in a program of music, prayer and games to learn more about how God is at work in their lives. Anne Marie Kaufmann

Sr. High Workcamp
High school students spend a week during the summer making repairs for residents who physically or financially are unable to make repairs on their own. Projects have included painting, constructing a wheel chair ramp, and replacing a living room floor. Paul Bevins

Adult Confirmation
Baptized Catholics, who have received the Eucharist and wish to be confirmed, attend classes in order to prepare for Confirmation. These adults are confirmed on Pentecost Sunday each spring. Michelle Miller

Baptism Preparation for Parents
Parents of children to be baptized are required to attend a baptism preparation class in order that they might actively participate in the rite and be fully aware of their obligations. It is recommended that godparents also attend. The one hour class takes place in the Parish Library at 12:00 p.m. on the fourth Sunday of each month. Rev. Mr. John Mallon

Marriage Preparation
Couples preparing to marry call the Parish Office and attend a Marriage Instruction session with other couples where the guidelines, questionnaire and program are outlined. Pre-registration to attend this session is required. Also, the Diocese requires that preparation begin at least six months prior to the wedding. Engaged couples then meet with a priest or deacon. In addition to Diocesan resources, the parish provides volunteer married couples who meet with the engaged couple to share experiences. (See “Sponsor Couples” under Community Life). Tricia Clark

St. Charles aims to support parents in their role as the primary educators of their children in matters of faith. To this end, we periodically offer speakers and programs on parenting issues and ways for parents to share their faith with their children.
