Story and pictures from past event

This year, Christmas in April will take place on Saturday, April 24, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. St. Charles will be supporting the initiative by sponsoring a home.

Volunteers are needed to do:
  • carpentry
  • drywall/plaster
  • painting
  • clean up
  • electrical
  • roofing
  • door installation
  • plumbing
  • window repair
  • in either full or half-day shifts. To volunteer, please contact Mary Lynn Skutley and note your area and level of expertise (if any!).

Our assignment this year is a brick duplex in the Nauck neighborhood on a hill overlooking Shirlington. The focus is on painting. We would like to do preparation on Saturday the 10th and 17th, including removing wallpaper from one of the walls.

If you need transportation, rest assured--we'll get you to the site!

    Description:

Once a year around the end of April, the Robert Pierre Johnson Housing Development Corporation (RPJ) sponsors a one-day work-blitz with a team of volunteers from the parish who repair a home for low income or handicapped family in need.

Christmas in April is the leading national volunteer organization working in partnership with communities to rehabilitate owner-occupied low-income housing. Since 1988, Christmas in April volunteers have repaired over 733 homes owned by elderly, disabled, and low-income citizens in Arlington and Fairfax counties.

The repair work includes carpentry, plumbing, basic electrical work, interior and exterior painting, removal of trash and debris, and other general maintenance that homeowners can no longer physically or financially do for themselves.

Repairs are made during a one-day work blitz on the last Saturday and Sunday in April. (Members of the Jewish community rehabilitate sites on the last Sunday in April through the "Sukkot in April" program.)
