Global Poverty and Global Debt:
How debt relief can lead to international development

Sunday, September 9, 2007 at 7 PM - Benedict Hall
Refreshments provided - all are welcome

Come to learn about global debt from a speaker from Jubilee USA. Jubilee USA campaigns for debt relief for the world's poorest nations, and looks at how international loans hurt the poorest among us. Our speaker, Brian Swarts, will tell us the Biblical and modern reasons to support debt relief, and how you can be involved. Marisa Vertrees, St. Charles' Social Justice Coordinator, will speak on St. Charles' support of debt relief, and how international debt affects our ministry in Haiti.

Obedience vs. Responsibility: The State of the "Laity" in the Church
Presented by Ladislas Orsy, S.J.

To be both obedient and responsible is an ongoing - never ending - balancing act - a lifetime's work. How do we understand what we must obey in the Church? What is our responsibility as the people of God?

Ladislas Orsy, S.J., is a Jesuit canon lawyer and theologian who has been instrumental in interpreting the meaning and implementation of the decrees of the Second Vatican Council. He is a professor at Georgetown Law Center.

For the Life of the Church: A Call to Lay Leadership
Presented by Dolores Leckey

Ms. Leckey's talk will be based on her recently published book, The Laity and Christian Education, Paulist Press (2006). The book tells how the role of the laity--as being essential in the life of the Church-- moved to "center stage" during the Second Vatican Council, and how lay people were among those who made it happen. It also ties this emerging role of the laity to the Council Declaration on Christian Education.

She previously spoke at St. Charles about the role of women in the Church.

Dolores Leckey is Senior Fellow at the Woodstock Theological Center at Georgetown University.
