What is the problem?
Migration and Refugee Services (MRS) of the Diocese of Arlington has
asked for assistance from parishes in resettling 82 Iraqi refugees
who will be arriving in our area over the next 6 weeks. They have resettled
200 refugees this year when they were only budgeted for 150. Recently,
the State Department asked them to assist with an additional 82 refugees,
primarily from Iraq, who have just been approved for immigration and
resettlement. As a result of this sudden humanitarian need over the
next 6-8 weeks, the MRS office is seeking direct and immediate assistance
from our parish.
What does MRS do?
Upon arrival in the United States, each refugee receives an allowance
of $425 from the State Department. Remaining support must be provided
by other agencies. Through funding from a combination of federal and
state funds, churches, foundations, and individuals, MRS provides extensive
support for the first 180 days the refugees live in the area, and can
provide employment, school counseling, mentoring, and other services
for up to 5 years.
Who are these refugees?
The majority of these Iraqis have helped the US armed forces
in their country during the war. Because they have assisted US troops,
their lives and those of their families are now in danger. Recognizing
the imminent danger to these families, the State Department has accepted
them for immediate resettlement in the United States.
What do they need?
The short answer is "everything" - housing, furniture,
household items, food, employment, plus help in dealing with the
stresses of adapting to a new culture and language.
What can you do?
Provide new pillows and/or provide gently used or new linens
and blankets for double-sized beds. Linens for a queen-sized bed
are acceptable. If you buy new items, please include the receipt as
your donation will then "count" under the Federal Match Grant
program. Donations can be placed in the large box marked "Iraqi
Refugees," which will be in the St. Charles foyer during
the weekend Masses lasting until September 6, 2008. In addition,
donations can be dropped off at the Parish Office through September
9. Office hours are 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. (weekdays), 9:00 a.m. to
6:00 p.m. (Saturday), and 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. (Sunday).
