Information About PDF Files
Installing the PDF Reader
- Go to the file location where you have stored the software. Double click the file (it will be named something like ar40eng.exe).
- As the installation process begins (e.g., unpacking Acrobat files and Setup), a number of boxes appear on your screen. Wait until the full screen is taken up by the installation files, and you are asked for further instructions.
- After the installation files are readied, you are led through a series of steps. First, you are prompted to close any programs that are open on your computer. If you have open programs and want to close them, hit cancel to exit the installation process, and close them. Then, start the process again, and click Next as your choice to continue installation.
- Accept the licensing agreement terms you are offered. Click I accept in order to get to the next step in installation. The program will not be installed if you do not accept the license agreement.
- You are asked where you want the file to be located, and unless you have a preference for a different file location, click Next. This will trigger the installation of the Acrobat Reader files, which will take a couple of minutes.
- Your last choice is to click Finish in order to complete the installation.
- At the end of the installation process, you are asked whether you want to be able to use the reader immediately. If you do, you must click the choice to restart your computer, which will cause your computer to go through its normal shut down and restart process. Otherwise, click the box that says that you will turn off your computer later.
- Depending on your computer (such as whether you have a previous version of Acrobat already installed) the sequence of steps outlined above may be slightly different. In general, if there are any other choices presented to you during the installation process, in order to continue installation click Next or I accept or Okay or any choice that signals the computer to continue installation. If at any time during installation you believe that you have made an error, hit Back to repeat a step, or Cancel to exit the installation process, which you can begin again.
Helpful hints for installing and downloading:
>>
- When you download Acrobat Reader, try to use the fastest computer you have access to. If you can download software at your place of work, this may be faster than using your home computer. You can e-mail the downloaded file to your home computer, and then install it at home.
- Before starting to download, you can create a new folder for the downloaded file to find it more easily. Right click on you desktop (opening) window in Windows 95 or 98, then left click New and then folder, and name it Downloads or Adobe. When you are asked where to save the file, save it to this folder. Dont rename the file just save it to the location you have chosen. Wherever you choose to locate the file, remember the location write it down before you tell the computer to save the file!
- Close any other programs while you are downloading or installing Acrobat Reader. This will help to speed up the download or installation and avoid losing data in case your system crashes during the process.
- If you have a lot of difficulty downloading or installing, you may want to disable your anti-virus program, (e.g., Norton, McAfee) and then run it immediately after you have completed the installation. Anti-virus software sometimes creates conflicts with other programs during installation. If you obtain Acrobat Reader directly from the Adobe commercial site, there is little chance that the download will be infected with a virus. Running the anti-virus program immediately after installation should make this even less likely to be a problem.
