Reflection: Similarly, the discourse about the coming of Elijah is an advanced topic that could only be understood by those who have progressed, such as the disciples. Because of our preparation and learning up to this point, we are ready for greater understanding than when we began our spiritual journey. We're not done yet, but we have come a long way. Our progress this Advent is a microcosm of our progress in our lives. With greater knowledge and ability come greater expectations. God can and should expect more from us because He has given more to us. We have grown so we can work more. We have learned so we can teach more. Our confidence should be high because God is so great in us and will lead us onward. When we get into trouble, He'll be there to bail us out. Fears that accompanied us when we were new to the faith should be in (or at least moving into) the past. We go boldly forward in faith. Where is forward? Forward is accepting Him into our lives and into our world. Forward is heralding His arrival and preparing the world to receive Him. To do this we don't have to be worthy - we have to be ready and willing. In

I Corinthians 2:1-10
1 When I came to you, brothers, proclaiming the mystery of God, I did not come
with sublimity of words or of wisdom.
2 For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ, and
him crucified.
3 I came to you in weakness and fear and much trembling,
4 and my message and my proclamation were not with persuasive (words of) wisdom,
but with a demonstration of spirit and power,
5 so that your faith might rest not on human wisdom but on the power of God.
6 Yet we do speak a wisdom to those who are mature, but not a wisdom of this
age, nor of the rulers of this age who are passing away.
7 Rather, we speak God's wisdom, mysterious, hidden, which God predetermined
before the ages for our glory,
8 and which none of the rulers of this age knew; for if they had known it, they
would not have crucified the Lord of glory.
9 But as it is written:
"What eye has not seen, and ear has not heard,
and what has not entered the human heart,
what God has prepared for those who love him,"
10 this God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit scrutinizes
everything, even the depths of God.
Psalm 80
Gospel - Matt. 17:10-13
10 Then the disciples asked him, "Why do the scribes say that Elijah must
come first?"
11 He said in reply, "Elijah will indeed come and restore all things;
12 but I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him
but did to him whatever they pleased. So also will the Son of Man suffer at
their hands."
13 Then the disciples understood that he was speaking to them of John the Baptist.
