Summary of a Fr. Gerry Creedon homily from April 05, 2007

"If I, therefore, the master and teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash one another’s feet." John 13:14

John's gospel does not present the institution of the Eucharist. Instead it recounts the Lord and Master taking off his robe, vesting himself in a towel and washing the feet of his disciples. Feet are not the most presentable feature of the human body. They are where we touch the ground. Jesus brings home to us the core of the Eucharist, and the meaning of his dying and rising: Service.

Tonight we reach out to the homeless of Washington through Unity Health Care. Our offerings will be our outreach of service to the poor who spend much of their days on their feet. In our sister diocese in the Dominican Republic, in the bishop's dining room, hangs a photo of a glass of wine and a loaf of bread with an inscription, "Hagamos de nuestra vida pan partida para la vida del mundo." Let us make of our lives bread broken for the life of the world.
