Jesus is Present Among Us

This is a summary of a Fr. Gerry Creedon homily delivered at St. Charles on April 18, 2004

"Put your finger here and see my hands." John 20: 19-31

A LITTLE 5-YEAR-OLD Filipino boy attends kindergarten at St. Charles School. His mother likes to refer to me by my first name, which also happens to be the first name of the school secretary. One day after breakfast with his mother, he went to class. He eagerly told his teacher, "I saw Gerry this morning." She asked, "Where?" He said, "At the Silver Diner." She asked, "Do you mean Gerry, the school secretary?" He became a little frustrated with her, "No," he protested, "Gerry…God."

He obviously confused the priest with his boss.

Yet in some way all of us should give rise to the same confusion. Every baptized as well as every ordained person is a child of God. Easter makes us God's People. We point to God.

During the Easter Vigil we welcome new adult members to the church. We believe that through participation with us they will find the Risen Lord.

Doubting Thomas needed to touch the body of the Risen Jesus before he could proclaim him as Lord. We need to encounter signs of his presence in his body also. Blessed are they who have not seen but have believed.

Despite scandal and sin in its personal and communal dimensions, our church is empowered by the spirit poured out from the cross of Jesus to proclaim that he is alive and present among us. Through sacramental actions and the daily witness of believers, may we draw many to new life and fresh faith.
