All Are Called to Do the Work of the Body of Christ
This is a summary of a Fr. Gerry Creedon homily delivered at St. Charles on September 28, 2003
"WOULD THAT ALL the people of the Lord were prophets!"
I called home last week. We have a new parish priest. The last pastor had involved the laity deeply in the life of the church. Harkening back to the Scriptures and to fair days in rural Ireland, one of his critics remarked; "I hope the new man will drive the dealers and the thimble-riggers out of the temple!"
In many places there is a tendency to go back to clericalism and to reserve all ministry to the ordained.
Joshua seemed to have a similar problem with a prophet who was not of Moses' camp. Moses had to set him straight: "Are you jealous for my sake?" Moses wished for a nation of prophets. In the Gospel John wanted to banish a healer who was not a disciple. Jesus demurred; "For whoever is not against us is for us".
The ministries fair this weekend is a time to renew the involvement of all of God's people in the work of the body of Christ. At our baptism we were Christened, anointed with the oil of chrism as priest, prophet and king. The same oil was used at confirmation to activate this call.
After Mass you are given an opportunity to survey all the various programs of the parish and encouraged to share your gifts. Because of an increase in our enrollment we are especially in need of catechists. To offer Communion under both species and to strengthen our outreach to the sick, we need more Eucharistic ministers. On our website, we have a link for volunteers, especially one time and short term commitments.
In addition to participation in the parish's mission all of us can consider the ways we minister in our family, neighborhood and job.Let us not leave it all to the clergy!
