The Fourth Annual
Glyne Goodridge Award
The Glyne Goodridge Award, established in the year 2000, recognizes
an outstanding volunteer who has made a significant contribution to the
parish in the area of outreach. This annual Award is named in memory of
Glyne Goodridge, who was instrumental in the development of the Circle
of Caring Ministry at St. Charles and the parish's Food Pantry.
In addition to Glyne, previous awardees are: Gail Goodridge (2001) and
Kay Nestor (2002).
To this impressive list, two names were added in 2003. The first is Bert
Sweigart. A long-time parishioner, Bert has provided many years of outstanding
service to our parish. His activities include decades of work with FISH,
Meals on Wheels, assistance before, during and after Masses and help to
a wide range of individuals in need.
The parish also honored Peter Dirr, Chairman of the parish's Circle of
Caring ministry, with the Glyne Goodridge Award. In addition to his energetic
leadership of this ministry, Peter also devotes extensive time to visiting
parishioners and other good works.
The Second Annual
St. Charles Borromeo Award
The St. Charles Borromeo Award honors outstanding contributions
to parish life. It was inaugurated in 2002, and the first recipient was
Gilda Ferer.
The parish recognized several people with the 2003 St. Charles Borromeo
Award.
The first honoree is not one personbut two, George and Teresa
Reyes. George was born in Colombia, and Teresa was born in Bolivia. George
began his service to St. Charles as the choir director in 1990. Today
he still directs the youth choir at the 1pm Mass. Teresa became involved
with the Education Ministry (catechesis) starting in 1987. She continues
to serve in the CCD program. She is currently the President of the Spanish
Catechetical Council of the Diocese of Arlington. As a couple, the Reyes
have been active in the Marriage Encounter program. In 1989, they initiated
the convalidation program which today serves as a model for other parishes
in the Diocese.
Next, the parish honored an entire ministry group, the parish
Web Teamespecially Mark Alves and Larry Prikockis, who co-chair
the Team, and Jose Dominguez Urosa, who directs the Spanish-language section
of the sitefor the work that its members do to inform, educate and
promote the mission of our parish both within our community and beyond
through www.stcharleschurch.org. In addition to creating and maintaining
hundredsperhaps thousandsof Web pages, the members of the
Web Team respond to requests for assistance from those involved in other
parish ministries and develop an environment of hospitality to all who
come on line.
Many thanks to our 2003 award winners and all our parish volunteers who
offer time, talent and treasure to build the reign of God's love at St.
Charles!
