Catholic Advocacy Day
January 27, 2003

Being my first experience with Catholic Advocacy Day (CAD), I wasn't quite sure what to expect. What I did know was that I wanted to get involved with important public policy issues in a meaningful way and meet new people while I was at it. On both counts, the day was a great success! The coordinators from St. Charles (especially Dan Marrin, Gail Goodridge and Father Creedon) and from other parishes in the Arlington and Richmond Dioceses were extremely helpful, well organized and made the day a real success. We had the opportunity to meet with several key delegates and state senators and their aides to pose our case on a wide variety of issues such as opposition to capital punishment and increasing the benefits provided under TANF [Temporary Assistance for Needy Families]. What really surprised me was the turnout -- not only for CAD, but for many other issues and interest groups. The state capital was flooded with groups and it really made me feel that people can get involved and voice their opinion. In all, I really enjoyed my time in Richmond and meeting new people. I would encourage anyone thinking of attending the next CAD or getting involved now to do so. You can really make a difference!

Requesting Assistance

Gail Goodridge asks Delegate James Almand for a check; Dan Marrin startled; and Fr. Gerry Creedon highly amused.
