US Representative James P. Moran presented a check to Borromeo Housing, Inc., on Saturday, May 11, 2002, at noon in the St. Charles library. Borromeo Housing, Inc. (BHI) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation founded in 1988 to serve the Northern Virginia communities. BHI enables at-risk and homeless teenage mothers to become productive citizens and nurturing parents. As a Second Chance Home program, BHI provides a supportive and supervised living arrangement for the residents and their children. The residents are required to complete their high school education, to learn parenting skills and to acquire other skills that promote their long-term economic independence and the well being of their children.

Rep. Moran was instrumental in securing grant funding for
the program through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's
Economic Development Administration. The funds will be used to expand BHI's
current program, using the Second Chance Homes model outlined in the 1996
Welfare to Work Act. With the additional funds, BHI hopes to expand to provide
housing and its program for the ever increasing number of at risk teenage
families. In addition to a safe and nurturing place to live, BHI provides comprehensive programming which addresses the problems of homeless and at risk teenage motherhood such as inappropriate living conditions, domestic violence, mental illness, substance abuse, unplanned pregnancies, limited education, limited job skills and poor life and parenting skills. The goal of the Second Chance Home is to guide these young mothers to long term self sufficiency. |
