The parish celebrated its annual Christmas
party and awards ceremony on Sunday, December 22, 2002, in the Rectory.
Each year, the winner of the Glyne Goodridge Award is announced at the
event. This year, parish also inaugurated a new honor, "The St. Charles
Borromeo Award."
The Third Annual Glyne Goodridge Award
The Glyne Goodridge Award, established in the year 2000, recognizes
an outstanding volunteer who has made a significant contribution to the
parish in the area of outreach. This annual Award is named in memory of
Glyne Goodridge, who was instrumental in the development of the Circle
of Caring Ministry at St. Charles and the parish's Food Pantry. Previous
awardees are: Glyne Goodridge (2000) and Gail Goodridge (2001).
This year's Awardee was Katherine (Kay) Nestor. A long-time parishioner,
Kay has directed the Meals on Wheels program for as long as anyone can
remember. She is one of several volunteers who counts the weekly collections.
Kay also served as an aide in the School Cafeteria and assisted with many
church and school activities, including the annual Christmas bazaars.
Before her retirement, Kay worked for Arlington County. She recently celebrated
her 95th birthday.
Owing to health reasons, Kay could not attend the ceremony. Peg Hogan,
her friend and neighbor, accepted the award (an engraved plaque and a
cross made by Glyne Goodridge), on her behalf. Fr. Creedon, Gail Goodridge
(Social Justice Ministry Chair), TJ Murphy (SJ Parish Council Rep) and
Carolyn Gretzinger (Parish Council President) made the presentation.
Introducing the St. Charles Borromeo Award
The inauguaral St. Charles Borromeo Award recognizes an outstanding
volunteer who has made a significant contribution to parish life. The
first recipient of this Award was Gilda Ferer. A member of St.
Charles since 1965, Gilda organized the RENEW program for Spanish-speaking
parishioners and served as a Lector and Eucharistic Minister. In 1997,
she participated in an interim working group that developed recommendations
on the mission, structure and organization of the Parish Council. Later
that same year, she was elected as the Latin American Community's Representative
to the Parish Council and served in that capacity until 1999. Her current
volunteer position is Coordinator of Liturgy for the Latin American Community.
At the end of this year, Gilda will retire from the Spanish Apostolate
of the Diocese of Arlington, where she has worked as Administrative Assistant
and Coordinator of Pastoral Programs.
Fr. Creedon presented "The St. Charles Borromeo Award" (an
engraved plaque and a St. Charles Borromeo medal) to Gilda Ferer, who
was in attendance.
