Parish Retreat Explores Prayer

By Liz McCloskey

About twenty people attended a one-day retreat on prayer at St. Charles on Saturday, September 22, 2001. The day, called Lord, Teach us To Pray [see the flier (Adobe PDF 33kb)] explored the whys and hows of prayer. Lit by candles and brightened by flowers, the Upper Room came alive with prayer, music, and sharing. As our nation has turned again and again to prayer in the two weeks since the September 11 terrorist attacks, the retreat was a timely response to the question of how to pray, particularly in the midst of suffering and disaster.

Our pastor, Fr. Gerry Creedon shared some very personal and touching reflections on his own prayer life in a talk encouraging each person to develop and practice his or her own daily prayer routine. Other speakers addressed the four basic components of prayer (the classic ACTS formula of prayer):

After a wonderful lunch prepared by Fran Hobbs and her amazing hospitality crew, Carol Poplin shared her experience with the Ignatian Spiritual Exercises and Jean Sweeney led the group in the contemplative experience of Centering Prayer.
