Highlights from the First 100 Years

  • Parish Capital Campaign In 1909, Bishop Augustine Van De Vyver, Bishop of Richmond, instructed Fr. Frederick Lackey to found the parish of St. Charles Borromeo, which would "embrace the village of Clarendon and the surrounding County of Alexandria for about forty (40) square miles."
  • The cornerstone for the first rectory, from the Senate Office Building, was laid in September 1916. Three rooms for the new school were completed on October 1, 1924; eight pupils were registered. The Benedictine Order of Sisters staffed the school.
  • In October 1955 a new school was erected on the corner of Kirkwood Road and Washington Boulevard. Ground for the new church was broken in October 1959. The church was dedicated on November 13, 1960.
  • In January 2004 Bishop Loverde dedicated the new Parish Center.
  • In June 2008, on the occasion of the retirement of Sister Benedict Kesock O.S.B., an endowment fund was established to help further Catholic education.
