14th Sunday in Ordinary Time
FROM THE PASTOR
Dear St. Charles Parishioners,
Jesus came to "proclaim liberty to captives".
As we celebrate Independence Day weekend let us pray for freedom from
tyranny and want for all Americans and for the parts of the world that
suffer violence and hunger.
During the summer we will be conducting our annual appeal for Haiti's
children. We have also initiated a Communities Rising project for community
led development projects overseas. Here at home we are joining with
other congregations in VOICE, (Virginians organized for community engagement)
in order to respond compassionately to issues such as homelessness,
immigration and health care.
Marisa Vertrees, Coordinator for Social Justice, 703 527 5500, will
provide you more information.
Let us celebrate liberty by working for justice and human rights,
Gerry Creedon

RECOMMENDED READING CORNER
Fr. Creedon recommends:
"Common Wealth: Economics for a Crowded Planet" by Jeffrey
Sachs, published by Penguin Group (2008). "If our prosperity is
to be maintained, there must be new strategies for sustainable development,
ones that will enable the world's 1.2 billion poorest people--those
who live on less than $1 a day--to rise out of extreme poverty. The
seemingly "soft issues" of the environment, public health,
and extreme poverty will become the hard issues
"
