Saints Peter & Paul, Apostles

FROM THE PASTOR
Dear St. Charles Parishioners,

Thanks to all who planned and coordinated the celebrations for my 40th Anniversary. I will continue to send thank you notes to as many as possible for their gifts and best wishes.

On behalf of the parish I am also thankful for the attention you gave to the Building Fund. Many were unaware of its purpose. You will find information on the website. We almost doubled the donations in the June Building Fund Collection. Please continue your generosity in July.

Bishop Loverde was with us last Sunday to promote vocations in the Latin American Community of St. Charles. It is very important that the recent immigrants feel the same sense of responsibility for our Catholic Church as did the previous generations of immigrants. I also want to do what I can to let the parish know that St. Charles School has an open door for all, especially our new immigrants.

I welcome Linda Lacot our new principal and pray for the continued success and growth of our school.

Feel the Spirit!
Rev. Gerry Creedon

RECOMMENDED READING CORNER
Fr. Creedon would like to recommend :
"Common Wealth: Economics for a Crowded Planet" by Jeffrey Sachs, published by Penguin Group (2008). "If our prosperity is to be maintained, there must be new strategies for sustainable development, ones that will enable the world's 1.2 billion poorest people--those who live on less than $1 a day--to rise out of extreme poverty. The seemingly "soft issues" of the environment, public health, and extreme poverty will become the hard issues…"

Prayer for Summer
Father, Creator of all, thank You for summer!
Thank You for the warmth of the sun
and the increased daylight.
Thank You for the beauty I see all
around me and for the opportunity to
be outside and enjoy Your creation.
Thank You for the increased time I
have to be with my friends and family,
and for the more casual pace of the summer season.

Draw me closer to You this summer.
Teach me how I can pray no matter
where I am or what I am doing.
Warm my soul with the awareness of
Your presence and light my path with
Your Word and Counsel.
As I enjoy Your creation, create in me
a pure heart and a hunger and a thirst for You. Amen.

From Letters from a Young Catholic

DEAR ST. CHARLES WORK CAMP TEENS
Ms. Lulu and I thank you for the wonderful pink visitors from Florida. I think she was waiting for them, or at least one of them to return a "bark" That was a delightful surprise from all of you. Continue your "good works." We love you …
-Sister Benedict and Ms. Lulu

School Office Summer Hours: The School Office will be open Tuesday thru Thursday from 9am to 1pm during the summer. The office will be closed the week of July 7-11 due to parking lot re-pavement. Should you need to contact school personnel, please do not hesitate to leave a message on the answering machine. We will return your call as soon as possible.

WRITERS NEEDED!
St. Charles is in need of writers for our social justice newsletter. This monthly publication will keep parishioners up-to-date about what our parish ministries, activities in the larger Diocesan community, and information about Catholic Social Teaching. Beginning and experienced writers needed! For more information, please contact Marisa Vertrees at (703) 527-5500, ext. 126.

FAITH-BASED INITIATIVE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
OAR of Arlington (Offender Aid & Restoration) has begun a program where faith-based communities are invited to serve as Support Teams for those returning to our community from jail or prison. Ex-offenders need support as they hone their life skills in securing employment, housing and developing new relationships. St. Charles currently has two teams, but one team is in need of two more people. If you are interested in this program, please contact Jo-Ann Duggan in the Parish Office.

BUILDING FUND UPDATE
Thank you to all our St. Charles Borromeo parishioners for your generosity and continued support to our Building Fund. Your dedication to this important parish fund through second collections and individual donations has allowed us to pay down our debt to the diocese and has helped us to make necessary facilities improvements. The contributions you have made to this fund have enabled us to replace one of our church compressors this past week-a total cost of $10,130.00. Your ongoing support will allow us to make additional necessary facilities improvements to the entire parish and school. We value your commitment to our faith community. Once again, thank you for your thoughtfulness.

BACKPACK COLLECTION
Just a reminder that during June & July we will be collecting the following school supplies for the children in grades K-12 who live in the Affordable Housing Communities of the Arlington Partnership for Affordable Housing: Backpacks, #2 pencils, blue & black ink pens, one-subject spiral notebooks or composition notebooks and pocket folders. Donations can be dropped off at the Parish Office. Contact Jo-Ann Duggan in the office if you have any questions. Thank you.
