11th Sunday in Ordinary Time
FROM THE PASTOR
Dear St. Charles Parishioners,
Many people expressed appreciation of last
week's bulletin presentation of "The Building Fund". Our
new Community Center owes its existence to the parishioners who pledged
about four million dollars though the Build the Spirit and Rooted in
Faith Campaigns. The vast majority of these pledges have been redeemed.
I appreciate the fidelity of our members to their commitments. We will
still need to pay almost a million dollars to the Diocese over the coming
years to return the loan it provided to complete the payment for the
Center. I invite new parishioners to join their fellows in making a
monthly commitment through Building Fund envelope.
Bishop Loverde will celebrate the 1 PM Mass on June 22 and will preach
on the topic of vocations especially in the Latino community.
On the 40th Anniversary of
my own ordination I give thanks for the opportunity I have had to
serve, especially here in the great parish of St Charles.
Feel the Spirit!
Gerry Creedon

THANK YOU
"I'm a first time Virginia Organizing Project (VOP) intern this
summer and I just wanted to thank you for supporting this program. I'm
very excited to be working on civic engagement in my community, and
I wouldn't have been able to do this as an unpaid internship - your
donations brought me here! Thanks, Cheri Seise," VOP Summer Intern.
VOP's internship and engagement program is one of the many groups that
benefit from St. Charles' Tithing program.
RAISE YOUR VOICE
We are in need of volunteers to support VOICE (Virginians Organized
for Interfaith Community Engagement) chapter of the Industrial Areas
Foundation, a faith-based community organizing project. St. Charles
is a member of VOICE, which will be working over the summer on ways
to combat inadequate housing, homelessness, and anti-immigrant laws
in Northern Virginia. We need volunteers to help spread the word & research
some of these issues! Contact Marisa, mvertrees@stcharleschurch.org,
(703) 527-5500, ext. 126.
WRITERS NEEDED!
St. Charles is in need of writers for our social justice newsletter.
This monthly publication will keep parishioners up to date about what
our parish ministries, activities in the larger Diocesan community,
and information about Catholic Social Teaching. Beginning and experienced
writers needed! For more information, please contact Marisa Vertrees
at (703) 527-5500, ext. 126.
THANK YOU ST. CHARLES CROP WALKERS!
Lately it seems as if we are reading about hunger every day. Thankfully,
St. Charles parishioners can always be counted on. Last year, we helped
the 2007 Arlington CROP Walk be the most successful Arlington CROP Walk
EVER, eventually resulting in $46,116 in contributions from 21 organizations
and nearly 200 walkers! 25% of the money went to our own Arlington Food
Assistance Center, and 75% went to hunger-prevention programs across
the U.S. and abroad. St. Charles parishioners raised nearly $1,700 up
from $1,400 in 2006. Let's do even better this year. Save the date.
The 2008 Arlington CROP Walk will be held on Saturday, Oct. 18. Great
fun for families, teens, everybody. We are looking for someone to help
coordinate this event. If you are interested, please contact Jo-Ann
Duggan at the Parish Office.
TITHING RECIPIENTS ARE THANKFUL
The following are excerpts from thank you notes St. Charles has received
in thanksgiving for tithes received:
SO OTHERS MIGHT EAT (SOME)
Please accept my sincere thanks for your generous contribution of $2,083.06
received by SOME on May 27, 2008. Your continued and long-standing support
is deeply appreciated and has a positive and powerful impact on the
lives of the homeless men, women and children we are privileged to serve.
Fr. John Adams, President
GOOD NEWS JAIL & PRISON MINISTRY
I want to thank you for your prayers and financial support for the Good
News Jail & Prison Ministry here in the Arlington County Detention Facility.
Without such support this ministry could not exist. Every dollar donated
is an eternal investment in the spiritual life of an inmate. There will
be many in heaven because of your prayers and support.
Earl V. Karl, Chaplain
Arlington County Detention Facility.
