10th Sunday in Ordinary Time
FROM THE PASTOR
Dear St. Charles Parishioners,
Thanks a thousand for a very generous offering of $12,000 dollars
last week to the people of Myanmar and China. In addition our Religous
Education children raised $1,700 with their bake sale!
This weekend's bulletin contains an important message for St Charles
parish with regard to financial support. In addition to your regular
giving though the offertory to support our ministries, I am asking you
to help me replenish
our Building Fund. Over the years you have donated millions through
your Build the Spirit and Rooted in Faith pledges. The Building Fund
receives the remaining pledges in the monthly Building Fund 2nd Collection
along with some additional donations. A bulletin insert, also on the
Web, explains where we are financially. The Building Fund was developed
primarily to complete the payment for our Community Center. Benedict
Hall and the Tiffany Werthmann Gym have been an essential support to
our mission. We want to complete the funding of the Center and plan
for the additional needs of our school and parish campus. I ask you
to consider a generous on going monthly commitment to our Building Fund.
As I look ahead to next week's celebration of my own 40 years of pastoral
ministry, I am delighted to find myself in a genuinely Eucharistic community
at St. Charles. We know how to keep on giving,
Feel the Spirit!
Gerry Creedon

RECOMMENDED READING CORNER
Fr. Creedon would like to recommend:
"Common
Wealth: Economics for a Crowded Planet" by Jeffrey Sachs,
published by Penguin Group (2008). "If our prosperity is to be
maintained, there must be new strategies for sustainable development,
ones that will enable the world's 1.2 billion poorest people--those
who live on less than $1 a day--to rise out of extreme poverty. The
seemingly "soft issues" of the environment, public health,
and extreme poverty will become the hard issues
"
CATHOLIC INQUIRY 6-WEEK SUMMER SESSIONS
Anyone interested in exploring more about the Catholic faith is invited
to attend any or all of the upcoming evenings. Each Monday evening,
June 23 through July 28 from 7:30-8:30pm in the Library. An overview
of the Adult Initiation process will be given each week after the
session for those interested. Adultfaith@stcharleschurch.org
for more information.
CARING FOR GOD'S CREATION
In today's first reading God is likened to the Earth. "He will
come to us like the rain, like spring rain that waters the earth."
whereas our "piety is like a morning cloud, like the dew that
early passes away." Celtic tradition celebrates God's presence
in the Earth. We can too. When you drive, make sure your tires are
properly inflated. It saves gas, saving you money and reducing pollution.
SENIOR ADULT TEA/LUNCH
Seniors of any age are invited to join Fr. Creedon after a special
noon Mass on Wednesday, June 25 for tea and lunch. There will also
be a "Moving On" round table discussion to address issues
of downsizing from a larger home to smaller living quarters. The panel
will be comprised of members of the parish. Please RSVP to Norma at
202-531-8189 or njjcanales@cox.net.

Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC) fight hunger by dining out
at their 5th Annual Restaurant Night, or by shopping that day at Crate
& Barrel. See AFAC's website: www.afacinfo.org
(or their
PDF) for further details on activities marking this day.
THANK YOU
The pantry staff wants to thank everyone at St. Charles who so generously
continues to help us by donating the food we give to our community's
hungry families and homeless individuals who visit us daily looking
for a meal or snack. Currently, the pantry is low on soups, vegetables,
tuna and other canned meats, dried beans/peas, jelly, pancake mix
(complete), syrup and cereal. And for our homeless clients, we need
single servings of pasta and tuna, juice boxes, single servings of
fruit and applesauce, individual packets of crackers and cookies,
and other small size snacks.
WRITERS NEEDED!
St. Charles is in need of writers for our social justice newsletter.
This monthly publication will keep parishioners up to date about what
our parish ministries, activities in the larger Diocesan community,
and information about Catholic Social Teaching. Beginning and experienced
writers needed! For more information, please contact Marisa Vertrees
at (703) 527-5500, ext. 126.
RAISE YOUR VOICE
We are in need of volunteers to support VOICE (Virginians Organized
for Interfaith Community Engagement) chapter of the Industrial Areas
Foundation, a faith-based community organizing project. St. Charles
is a member of VOICE, which will be working over the summer on ways
to combat inadequate housing, homelessness, and anti-immigrant laws
in Northern Virginia. We need volunteers to help spread the word &
research some of these issues! Contact Marisa, mvertrees@stcharleschurch.org,
(703) 527-5500, ext. 126.
ALTERNATIVE GIFT FAIR!
It's not too early to start planning for Christmas. This year, St.
Charles will have an alternative gift fair, with fair trade products,
and opportunities to donate to our ministries and other worthy causes.
If you'd like to help out, please contact Marisa Vertrees, mvertrees@stcharleschurch.org,
703-527-5500, ext. 126. Our first meeting will be Thursday, June 12th,
