2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time
FROM THE PASTOR
Dear St. Charles Parishioners,
"The church was not merely a thermometer that recorded the ideas
and principles of popular opinion; it was a thermostat that transformed
the mores of society." -Martin Luther King Jr.
As we celebrate the prophetic witness of Martin Luther King , let us
work as he did for the victory of justice and the triumph of life over
death .
Today's Bulletin and the parish website contain information on ways
of acting on our principles. You may join our Respect
Life Committee on Jan 22nd in the Annual March for Life, for the
right to life is the foundation of all other human rights. You may join
our Bishops on Catholic
Advocacy Day in Richmond on Jan 28 to seek remedies for poverty,
immigration issues, homelessness, life concerns and injustice. You may
also become a member of Virginia Catholic Conference or our own St Charles
Advocacy Network and become a year round advocate. Our parish has also
joined an inter-faith network of Muslims, Christians and Jews to seek
justice in Northern VA. VOICE is a newly formed organization that focuses
on community empowerment. We need parish representation. Please be in
touch with Marisa Vertrees in the parish office to learn more about
all of these efforts via Mvertrees@stcharleschurch.org
As we are in the midst of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, a
special "thank you" to Richard Hauke who have been leading
our Interfaith Committee. Richard
has been a great asset to this important work. Jim Drummond will be
taking the helm now as Richard continues to enjoy his retirement. Thank
you Richard.
Let's also have fun at Mardi Gras Madness.
Last minute tickets are available.
Feel the Spirit!

PARKING AT GEORGE MASON
We are sad to say that the Arlington campus of George Mason University
has begun construction on the lot that we have been privileged to use
for so many years. So we are no longer able to park there. So as we
all find additional parking on the street, please remember to be respectful
of our neighbors about not blocking driveways or parking illegally.
Arlington County is known to stay on top of illegal parkers so don't
take any chances. And if you are going to stay at the Church for more
than a specific Mass, we ask you to not park in the lot so Mass go-ers
can more readily find a spot. Thanks for everyone's patience and cooperation.
And thanks to GMU for many years of parking!
SPONSOR OF THE WEEK: Our Special Thanks to Bob & Tricia
Clark, Arlington's Favorite Realtors for their support.

The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, which has been celebrated in
the United States for 100 years this year, enjoys a special observance
each year in northern Virginia with a Prayer Service led by the leaders
of the four member churches of the Virginia LARCUM Covenant. Each year,

- are represented as one church hosts and another speaks. This year,
our northern Virginia celebration will be hosted by Bishop Charlene
Kammerer of the Virginia Conference UMC at Annandale United Methodist
Church on January 22 at 7:30 p.m. The newly-installed bishop of the
Evangelical Lutheran Church in America/Metro DC Synod, Bishop Richard
