LORD OF MIRACLES - Señor de los Milagros
Celebrated at St. Charles Oct 6 & 7
Tradition tells that on November 13, 1655 a great earthquake hit Lima,
Peru, but did not touch the wall where an Angolan slave had created
a painting of the crucified Lord. The people of Lima began to honor
that image, thus beginning the devotion to the Lord of Miracles. October
20, 1687, a seaquake destroyed the port of Callao and Lima, but once
again the painted image was spared. A third earthquake occurred on October
28, 1746, but once again the venerated image of the Lord of Miracles
survived. Lima, as well as many other places throughout the world, holds
huge processions on October 18, 19 & 20 in honor of the Lord of
the Miracles, Señor de los Milagros. The earthquake on August
15, 2007 has served as reinforcement of faith and belief in the Lord
of Miracles by Peruvians all over the world.
