11th Sunday in Ordinary Time
FROM THE PASTOR
Dear St. Charles Parishioners,
The devotion to Jesus under the title of Divine Mercy was promoted in the church by Pope John Paul II to emphasize the unconditional quality of God's forgiveness. Our parish will be host to the Icon of the Divine Mercy that comes from the late pope’s hometown. Five families from the parish will welcome replicas to their homes to pray for healing in families and community.
- There will be a reception of the icon in the chapel on June 23 at 12 noon with rosary Chaplet and the entrustment of 5 replicas of the painting to five families.
- On Sunday the 24th, the 1pm Mass will highlight the image of Divine Mercy and the themes of mercy and healing of families.
- On Thursday the 21st, the Praise and Worship ministry will prepare a Holy Hour.
- On Saturday the 30th at 1pm, a bi-lingual Mass will conclude the parish's devotion, and a painting of the Divine Mercy willed to the parish by Celia Coronado will be installed in the Reconciliation room as a permanent invitation to the sacrament of Mercy.
- All are invited to these parish events. The Icon will be in the chapel during the week with the door open daily for prayer.
I thank the Grupo de Oracion de la Divina Misericordia and our Respect Life Committee for facilitating this week of devotion and prayer.
Come to a special evening on June 24 at 7 pm for a presentation by John Bruton, European Ambassador and former Taoiseach of Eire, on the theme of faith and secularization in modern Ireland.
Peace,

Gerry Creedon

PARISHIONERS ASK FOR CHANGES TO WEBSITE
Here’s what parishioners had to say about the parish website, www.StCharlesChurch.org, during last month’s annual survey of online visitors. We received 93 responses, up sharply from 68 in 2006. Satisfaction plunged 10% as measured on a 5-point scale. The average rating had been 4.5 for two straight years, but this year that dropped to 4.1. Last year nearly two-thirds of respondents rated the site a 5, but that figure was cut in half this year. At the same time, twice as many rated the site only a 3 compared to the previous year. A major area of frustration is that many important events that are publicized through bulletin inserts never make it to the website. We’ve brought this issue up with the parish council and will work together to come up with an effective way to publicize major events effectively. Another area for improvement is explaining the marriage preparation process on the website, which we will do. See the website for full results from the survey.
June 30th Multicultural Party
A call for volunteers! We need help serving food and drinks at the bar. The more hands we have the lighter the load will be. Another way to volunteer is by giving of your talents. Can you bake a favorite cake or candy is that just too good not to share? Or a special favorite of your country. Bring it to share with your community! If you would like to offer your time and talent, please call the Parish Office at 703-527-5500.

SALT Advocates Needed
SALT (Social Action Linking Together) is a faith-based network of parishioners trying to bring social justice and economic justice teachings of the church to bear on public policy and legislation, especially at local and state levels. To sign up for SALT's current legislative priority network to be informed about current issues and priorities affecting low-income Virginians, contact John Horejsi at jhorejsi@cox.net.
ST. CHARLES HAS NEW CLOTHING BIN ON PREMISES
We would like to bring your attention to the green outdoor clothing container that has been placed at the east end of the parking lot, in one of the spaces against the building. The Clothing Recycling Company is a local business set up to give something back to the communities in which we work and live. They work in partnership with local charities (United Health Care, Arlington Street People’s Assistance Network and many others) to provide clothing for the homeless and the needy in the Washington Metropolitan area. Please consider dropping your unwanted clothing and linens in the bin so that they can be given to those in need.
THANK YOU
The Alliance for Housing Solutions thanks St. Charles for your generous tithe contribution of $1906.43. AHS is a broad-based coalition of community groups and business leaders representing a growing voice for affordable housing option in our community. This money will be used to sponsor the Thomas P. Leckey Housing Forum, to educate the public on affordable housing issues, and to fund valuable research studies into economic incentives to support affordable housing. Thank you again for your much needed and generous contribution.
WORLD REFUGEE DAY
World Refugee Day was officially adopted by the United Nations in 2000 as a day of solidarity with refugees around the world. In the Diocese of Arlington we welcome hundreds of new refugees every year who must begin their new life with new hope. On June 23rd, 2007, Migration and Refugee Services will celebrate World Refugee Day with a picnic celebration at Lubber Run Park (N. Columbus and 2nd St. N, Arlington, VA). Festivities begin at 11:20 am with music, giveaways, food, refugee art, and fun! Please join us as we celebrate the courage of our neighbors who have come to start their lives anew. For more information call: Arlington Diocese Refugee Services, 703-841-3876.
