5th Sunday of Easter
FROM THE PASTOR
We welcome to the Lord's Table our first communicants. The Easter season
has many stories of Jesus showing himself to his friends in the breaking
of the bread. May the bread of life bring our children, their families,
and their faith community into a closer friendship with Jesus, our Risen
Savior.
Come to Sunday's Conversation with Creedon, where I will host
a dialogue on the theme: “Young Adults in the Church; Problem
or Opportunity" in Benedict Hall at 7pm. Of course I see
our young adults as a major blessing. Young adults David and Karla
Heinen, who recently moved south, were outstanding examples of service
in their roles with youth and liturgy.
Feel the Spirit!

CONVERSATIONS WITH CREEDON
Today at 7pm -- Benedict Hall
Refreshments Provided – All Are Welcome
Young Adults and the Catholic Church: Problem or Opportunity?
In a recent Catholic News Service article, the lack of participation
of Catholics in their 20s and 30s was cited as a serious concern by
those Catholics surveyed in a recent Gallup poll. The survey results
confirmed findings that younger Catholics tend to have a looser, more
tenuous relationship with the Church than their older counterparts.
Come and hear what some younger Catholics at St. Chares, including some
newly initiated, have to say about their faith and participation within
the Catholic tradition. Come and share your own experience.
Fr. Gerry Creedon will lead the panel discussion and all are welcome.
FOOD PANTRY
NEEDS
PLEASE HELP! Our food Pantry is extremely low on the following
items: pancake mix/syrup, canned vegetables, soup, peanut butter/jelly,
pasta and sauce, powdered/canned milk as well as the pop top cans of
meats/tuna, fruit and energy/granola bars. On behalf of the many
people we are able to help with food and gift cards, we would like to
thank you for your generous donations.

REFLECTION FOR THE WEEK
The Fifth Sunday of Easter brings us stories from Acts
of the Apostles of Paul and Barnabas and their work in the
early church. John's Gospel returns to the Last Supper.
Jesus gives his followers a new way of life: “This is how all
will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
In the continuing weekday readings from the Acts of the Apostles,
we see Paul and Barnabas preaching to the Gentiles. They encounter some
who want to make them gods; others who want to stone them. A major discussion
is held about whether a Gentile had to become a Jew before becoming
a Christian. Peter declared that God granted Gentiles "the Holy
Spirit just as he did us" and urged them not to burden Gentiles
with the difficult Jewish laws. The group turned to the Holy Spirit
and prayed for guidance and decided that Gentiles did not have to adhere
to Jewish laws. Paul followed the Spirit to expand his travels, ending
with his decision to go to Macedonia.
Nothing can separate us from the love of God. We may want to hide from
it or we might feel unworthy of that love, but it is ours anyway. The
message Jesus offers us this week is the image of the vine and the branches
- intertwined, growing together and inseparable. We have not earned
God's love, nor can we. It is freely offered to us and our lives would
change if we could really believe it and accept it.
If we really believed in that great gift of God's love to us, we wouldn't
be worried about how much we have, how successful we are or compare
ourselves to others. We could forgive more easily and forget hurts more
readily.
This week is a wonderful week to ask for help to accept that endless
love from our Lord. Each morning as we awake, we can pause at the side
of our bed and open our hands, in the traditional pose of a supplicant.
"Lord, help me to accept what I might struggle with accepting -
your love. Help me to open my heart to you today more fully and to be
more loving and compassionate to those you put into my life."
That tiny prayer may make it easier to face my day with its conflicts
and confusion. During the day when our culture offers me the empty "satisfaction"
of buying more, drinking more, eating more, I can open my hands again
and ask for the grace to be guided in all my decisions. When I am tempted
to let my feelings be hurt over petty or imagined slights or pout because
others can't read my mind, I can open my hand and heart again to our
Lord and remember how loved and cherished I am.
It is that peace, that miraculous love, that will change
our hearts and lives in ways nothing else can.
