Fifth Sunday, Ordinary Time

Dear St. Charles Parishioners,

Next weekend, Feb 10-11, the diocese will conduct the Bishop's Lenten Appeal. Last year our parishioners increased their pledges to the needs of the diocese significantly.

I hope we can continue that support.

"Bringing Hope to Those In Need" is the theme. Yesterday, a large group of parishioners, including Latinos Unidos de San Carlos, joined me as we accompanied Bishop Loverde to Richmond to speak to our legislators on the rights of immigrants, on the need to raise the minimum wage and other life and justice questions. The Virginia Catholic Conference who organized this effort is only one of the ministries of our diocese that make hope real for so many. Let us play our part in the mission of our larger Church by our generosity with this year's appeal.

Note that the "Conversations with Creedon" I had planned on Haiti has been postponed from Feb 4 to March 4.

Thanks to all who attended a fruitful discussion on Darfur and to all who participated in Catholic School week.
Rev. Gerry Creedon

Please read the tabloid "Bringing Hope to Those in Need" being distributed with today's bulletin and prayerfully consider Bishop Loverde's appeal for support to assist in the work of our Diocese. This is an opportunity to unite with fellow Catholics to share our blessings and assist Vocations, Catholics Charities, Family Life, Youth, and all the other programs carried out by our Diocese. HAVE YOU BEEN AWAY FROM THE CHURCH?
If you are a Catholic who has been away from the Church, we invite you to be an active part of us again. "Landings," an 8-week discussion series, is a safe landing place for returning/inactive Catholics to ask questions and update your faith as an adult. We begin our spring session on Feb. 28. Call Anna LaNave 703-455-2951. returning-catholics@stcharleschurch.org.

NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS
If you made a resolution for the New Year to look for an opportunity to volunteer, please check out the Circle of Caring web page or call Peter Dirr at 703-237-0627. Visiting the homebound, providing transportation, helping with funeral Masses, and planning senior lunches are just a few of the many services provided by the Circle of Caring where your talent and time would be very much appreciated.

HOUSE BLESSING THE TOP DOWNLOAD OF 2006
Last week we reviewed the most visited pages on our parish website, www.stcharleschurch.org, for 2006. Let's turn now to the most downloaded files. The winner by far was the PDF version of the Catholic house blessing, which was downloaded nearly 4,000 times. The next most popular files were the calendar/room reservation form, the bulletin article submission form and religious education registration. Remember, you can save yourself a trip by grabbing the parish forms you need from the website.

PLANNING AND MANAGING YOUR RETIREMENT
St. Charles will be sponsoring a free 2-part retirement seminar for individuals who are 50+ and have retired or are planning their retirement. Legal considerations, financial management, and health care are just a few of the issues to be covered. Mark your calendars for February 24 and March 10 from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM. Watch the bulletins and web site for further information or call Peter Dirr at 703-237-0627.

LENT SMALL FAITH GROUP FACILITATORS NEEDED
Lent will begin on Wednesday, February 21 this year. Last year, over 120 folks participated in weekly small faith groups that met at the Church or in homes for the 5 weeks of Lent. Most groups are 6-10 people. All materials & brief facilitator training is provided.
