Thirty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time
FROM OUR PASTOR
Dear St. Charles Parishioners,
I would like to invite all of you to two upcoming educational events.
This Sunday night at 7pm, I welcome two leaders from Virginia's Muslim
and Jewish communities to join me in a conversation, "Building
Interfaith Understanding through Community Involvement." Debra
Linick is Asst. Director to NOVA Jewish Community Relations Council
of Greater Washington. M. Imad Damaj is President and Social Programs
Coordinator of the VA Muslim Coalition for Public Affairs. They are
members with me of the Board of the VA Interfaith Center for Public
Policy, where I represent Bishop Loverde. I believe the discussion may
lead to greater understanding and engagement as we reflect on fundamental
values such as justice, compassion and peace, held in common by the
three great world religions.
Next Saturday November 11 between 9:30am and 2:30pm I will host faculty
from All Hallows College in Dublin, my Alma Mater, for a presentation
"Telling the Story Then
and Now." Ronan Tobin and Fr. Bob Whiteside will provide an
exciting look at how technology can assist us in the age-old work of
evangelization. You may register at the door,
Peace, Paz, Salaam, Shalom, Siochain

THANK YOU FOR OKTOBERFEST
Stand up and take notice! The Rowley's - Angela & Allan have done
it again. We've just celebrated a great Oktoberfest! Thanks to them
and to their tremendous leadership. They had the right people in the
right places who gave their all. We grossed over $16,000.00 for our
school. We are blessed. Thank you one and all who participated in any
way. But most of all, thank you Angela & Allan. In Christ, Sister
Benedict Kesock, O.S. B.

"One of our greatest blessings in the United States is our right
and responsibility to participate in civic life
The central question
should not be, 'Are you better off than you were four years ago?' It
should be, 'How can 'we'--all of us, especially the weak and vulnerable--be
better off in the years ahead?' How can we protect and promote human
life and dignity? How can we pursue greater justice and peace?"

NOV 4 - FEAST OF ST. CHARLES.
WHO WAS HE?
Charles Borromeo was born on 2 October 1538 in the castle at Aron, diocese
of Novara, Italy, to a wealthy, noble family. Nephew of Pope Pius IV.
Suffered with a speech impediment. Civil and canon lawyer at age 21.
Ordained on 4 September 1563, and Bishop of Milan on 7 December 1563.
He allotted most of his income to charity, forbade himself all luxury,
imposed severe penances upon himself. He sacrificed wealth, high honors,
esteem and influence to become poor. During the plague and famine of
1576 he tried to feed over 60,000 people daily and did not leave when
other civic authorities fled. He died 3 November 1584 of a fever at
the age of 46. His feast day is November 4th. He is the patron saint
for ulcers; apple orchards; bishops; catechists; catechumens; colic;
intestinal disorders; Lombardy, Italy; diocese of Monterey California;
seminarians; spiritual directors; spiritual leaders; starch makers;
stomach diseases. "If we wish to make any progress in the service
of God we must begin every day of our life with new eagerness."

FOOD PANTRY NEEDS THANKSGIVING
It's that time of the year and the St. Charles Community is gearing
up for Thanksgiving. Thanks to Fran Hobbs and her wonderful group of
volunteers, 25 families will receive completely cooked Thanksgiving
Dinners. Please see last week's bulletin insert to see how you can help
with this project. Meanwhile, the Food Pantry is in need of Thanksgiving
food to help out other families in our area. Please bring in canned
sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, corn, gravy, stuffing, and other NON-PERISHABLE
FOOD items. We are always overwhelmed with the generosity of the St.
Charles community and thank you for all you do to help those in need.
USED VEHICLE NEEDED
Although we usually don't handle used vehicles, we have an unusual and
urgent need. A mother of five is in desperate need of a vehicle that
she can use to transport herself and her young children. One of them
has special needs and often has scheduled doctors' visits. If anyone
is in a position to donate a van to her (or help otherwise), please
contact Jo-Ann Duggan, Social Services Coordinator here at St. Charles.
Thank you so much.
BORROMEO HOUSING UPCOMING EVENTS
On Saturday, November 18th, (BHI) will once again lead a group down
to the National Mall for Fannie Mae's annual Help the Homeless Walk.
Please contact BHI director, Joy Myers at joyleahmyers@yahoo.com,
