17th Sunday in Ordinary Time
From our School Principal
"Golden Thank you" to the Filipino Community.
My Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, you really know how to CELEBRATE
LIFE! Thank you from the bottom of my mended heart.
Your celebration will long be remembered with deep gratitude and joy
for the rest of my life. It was the party of a lifetime to be treasured.
I'm forever grateful to each of you who participated and celebrated
for and with me on the occasion of my Golden Jubilee. I have never laughed
so hard in all my life.
Thank you! God loves you and I do, too! You are in my daily love and
prayers.
In Christ,
Sister Benedict, O.S.B.

FOOD PANTRY
The Pantry needs the following items: canned green vegetables, canned
chunky soups, fruit, canned tuna, canned pasta such as ravioli, peanut
butter, jelly, pasta, pasta sauce, rice, muffin/pancake mix, breakfast
bars, cereal, small individual size packs of cookies crackers and fruit.
We do need smaller sized packaging, 1-pound cans or 16-ounce boxes
economy
sized are too big to pack effectively. We also need plain wholesome
food, no condiments, spices or exotic tastes needed. In addition, the
Food Pantry at St. Charles needs a steady supply of paper grocery bags
with handles, such as those from Trader Joe's, Harris Teeter, or Whole
Foods Market. Thanks for your continued and overwhelming generosity.
DID YOU MISS IT?
Carol O'Neil, parishioner and Associate Dean at the Georgetown University
Law Center, shared her reflections on Spirituality and Work on Wednesday,
July 19, as part of our Adult Summer Seminar Series. Carol began by
exploring definitions of work and shared the basic Catholic understanding
of work as a good and necessary way to be a part of building the kingdom
and contributing to the common good. Carol then invited those present
to reflect on how we can live with the "faith vision" rather
than the "world vision" at work including:
- Does my current job contribute to justice or injustice?
- At work, do I act with justice and honestly or have I become complacent
and lazy?
- How do I treat others I work with and come in contact with? Do
I encourage, support and forgive co-workers?
- How well am I balancing work and family, outside activities and
rest?
Carol shared various ways to improve our integration of work and spirituality.
She suggests beginning the day with prayer and expressing our intention
of our day to God. The end of each day can also call us to prayer as
we examine the day and call to mind those things we are thankful for,
those things we need assistance with, and those times where we seek
forgiveness. Having physical reminders at work can be a help. This might
be a picture, an icon, a cross or an inspirational saying, to remind
us what we hope to be about. Meditation and recitation of mantras can
be a helpful way to call God to mind as well as to reduce stress
LATINOS UNIDOS - SPONSORED FORUM AUGUST 13
All are invited to a forum sponsored by Latinos Unidos of St. Charles
in Benedict Hall at 2pm on August 6th to discuss two problems in our
community. The first problem is the documentation requirements for drivers'
licenses that prevent individuals from legitimately obtaining them.
Second, the forum will also discuss how to support follow-up actions
to preserve as much affordable housing as possible in Buckingham Village.
Please attend to find out how you can help find solutions to these problems.
For further information, contact Eric Giblin at 703-582-4772.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION---HELP NEEDED
Jesus says, "Let the children come to me and do not prevent them;
for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these." (Luke 18:16).
We are in need of catechists and assistant catechists to share Jesus'
teaching with children in our parish on Sunday mornings during the 2006-07
school year. If you love your faith and have a gift with children, please
consider serving as a catechist. In particular, we hope to open a class
to serve children with special needs this year. If you have a background
in special education or experience working with special needs populations,
please consider volunteering in this very important new ministry in
our parish. Contact Anne Marie, akaufmann@stcharleschurch.org.
703-527-5500.
REGISTRATION FOR RELIGIOUS EDUCATION AND YOUTH MINISTRY
Registration for 2006-2007 is now open for all children and youth ages
3 through high school for religious education and youth ministry programs.
Forms are available at the Parish Office and on-line at www.stcharleschurch/ministry/education.htm.
