16th Sunday in Ordinary Time
FROM OUR PASTOR
Dear St. Charles Parishioners,
Summer time is an occasion for renewal and transformation. Our Social
Justice Committee recognizes Rachel Lustig for her great work in chairing
our SJ Committee and welcomes Jason Albritton to that role. Rachel has
strengthened the vision and organization of our outreach. I know that
Jason will continue that work and bring to it his unique gifts, especially
his love of the environment.
In the area of liturgy, Jack Lane hands on the leadership role to
Mike Doyle. Jack has served as a conscientious and hard working chair
of our Liturgy Committee. He has brought to our ministries a gift for
organization and planning as well as his great love for music. Let us
welcome and support Mike Doyle. He is studying liturgy at Washington
Theological Union to further equip him for this task.
I also want to appreciate Muriel Dreswick, Binh Duong and Maria Chau
for their many, many years of service with the provision and elegant
arrangement of flowers for St. Charles. I also welcome the new volunteers
who have stepped forward to serve.
May all the talents and gifts we have received as a parish serve to
nourish the growth of God's garden.
Gerry Creedon

"Understanding the Bible:
How Catholics Read the Scriptures"
Presented by Dr. Alan Mitchell
Many Catholics get their "dose" of Scripture at Sunday Mass.
Our Protestant brothers and sisters can often run circles around us
with their knowledge and understanding of the Bible. The Catholic tradition
of understanding the Bible is in some ways like but also different from
the Protestant tradition. Beginners, longtime Scripture readers, and
everyone in between are invited. Dr. Alan Mitchell is an Associate Professor
of New Testament and Christian Origins at Georgetown University and
is Director of the Annual Institute on Sacred Scripture.

DID YOU MISS IT?
Our second Summer Seminar, Reflections on Marriage: Learning to love
the Ordinary and Holy, was presented July 13 by Eric and Debby West.
The Wests reflected on the social and sacramental dimensions of Marriage,
sharing their own experiences with family of origin issues, aging parental
care, raising a family of boys, and their own relationship which survived
some turbulent times. They are involved with the Retrouvaille program
which enables willing couples to seek and re-discover the spark in their
marriage. At the outset, the West's explained that Marriage is a sacrament
couples not only confer upon each other, with others in the Body of
Christ as witnesses, but that they also become the sacrament as they
grow in their relationship and in their example to family, friends and
neighbors. They pointed to the underlying foundation of this union as
being a building block for the larger church and a place to practice,
fail and reconcile within the Scriptural morality that we Catholics
profess.

LATINOS UNIDOS - SPONSORED FORUM ON AUGUST 6
All are invited to a forum sponsored by Latinos Unidos of St. Charles
in Benedict Hall at 2pm on August 6th to discuss two problems in our
community. The first problem is the documentation requirements for drivers
licenses that prevent individuals from legitimately obtaining them.
Second, the forum will also discuss how to support follow-up actions
to preserve as much affordable housing as possible in Buckingham Village.
Please attend to find out how you can help find solutions to these problems.

as well as additional resources on that topic.
REGISTRATION FOR RELIGIOUS EDUCATION AND YOUTH MINISTRY
Registration for 2006-2007 is now open for all children and youth ages
3 through high school for religious education and youth ministry programs.
Forms were mailed home to those registered in programs last year. If
you did not receive a form or are new to the parish, forms are available
at the Parish Office. Questions? Contact Anne Marie Kaufmann, 703-527-5500,
x 119 or akaufmann@stchaleschurch.org.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION---HELP NEEDED
Jesus says, "Let the children come to me and do not prevent them;
for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these." (Luke 18:16).
We are in need of catechists and assistant catechists to share Jesus'
teaching with children in our parish on Sunday mornings during the 2006-07
school year. If you love your faith and have a gift with children, please
consider serving as a catechist. In particular, we hope to open a class
to serve children with special needs this year. If you have a background
in special education or experience working with special needs populations,
please consider volunteering in this very important new ministry in
our parish. For more information or to volunteer, contact Anne Marie,
703-527-5500, x 119 or akaufmann@stcharleschurch.org.
C'YA FEST CONCERT
St. Charles Young Adults (C'YA) have never had it this good. Their social
events have been a hit, and Praise and Worship has been lively and engaging.
But if you thought you heard it all from C'YA, think again. They are
ending the summer season with "rain". Rain? Yes, Ceili Rain!
The winners of five 2005 Unity awards among Best Band and Music Video,
Ceili Rain will be bringing it all down on Washington DC for C'YA FEST
2006. It is being held at the St. Charles School Gym on August 26th
at 7:30 PM. Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for children. There will
be music, food, stands, friends and good clean fun. So come on out and
make a night to remember! Please visit www.cyafest.com for more information
or contact Rommel at rommelb@gmail.com.
