15th Sunday in Ordinary Time
FROM OUR PASTOR
Dear St. Charles Parishioners,
On July 2 the Parish welcomed four young adults, Fernando, Mario,
Sucely, and Luis, were initiated into the Church through Confirmation,
profession of faith and First Communion. I asked them their motivation.
Among the responses I received was; "I was influenced by the witness
and guidance of Julio our catechist. "Julio Cesar Sosa was an adviser
and founder of Cristo Joven, a young adults group in our Latin American
Community. All of the new church members were participants in Christo
Joven. That Monday night Julio died unexpectedly of a heart attack at
the age of 38.
For years he had dedicated himself to the work of evangelization,
riding his bike the St. Charles every weekend, fostering the faith of
our immigrant youth. He had a unique capacity to inspire others with
his humility, caring and infectious faith. His family from El Salvador
desired to have his body returned home. The parish is supporting this
need from our central funds. The Latin American community has taken
up donations for that cause. If you would like to be a part of the corporal
work on mercy, send check to St. Charles identifying Julio Cesar Sosa.
Our prayer and our love go out to his family in their loss. Let us
rededicate Descanse en Paz, Julio.
Gerry Creedon

Spirituality at Work: Opportunity or Impossibility?
Presented by Carol O'Neil
We often associate faith with participation at Church, but how does
our faith affect our daily lives and our work? How can we integrate
our spirituality into our jobs and careers and embrace the call to be
authentic disciples at work as well. Carol O'Neil is an Associate Academic
Dean at the Georgetown University Law Center and is a parishioner of
St. Charles

"Understanding the Bible: How Catholics Read the Scriptures"
Presented by Dr. Alan Mitchell
Many Catholics get their "dose" of Scripture at Sunday Mass.
Our Protestant brothers and sisters can often run circles around us
with their knowledge and understanding of the Bible. The Catholic tradition
of understanding the Bible is in some ways like but also different from
the Protestant tradition. Beginners, longtime Scripture readers, and
everyone in between are invited. Dr. Alan Mitchell is an Associate Professor
of New Testament and Christian Origins at Georgetown University and
is Director of the Annual Institute on Sacred Scripture.

THE FALL
What does the compassion of Christ look like in the modern world? How
do I become a more compassionate person? The JustFaith Program is an

reflection, study, prayer, and community. Space is limited and the group
will meet on Mondays from Sept through May. Contact Sharon, 202-258-5072

crackers, pretzels, canned (evaporated) milk, cans of chicken &

PROJECT LAZARUS NEWS
Because of your generosity, we were able to contribute $200 towards
the rent of a single mom who had been unemployed for one month. She
has since started a new job and hopes to be able to pay her rent and
other expenses next month. We also paid $155 to keep a family's water
from being turned off. The husband suffers from seizures and is unable
to hold a job. These are just two of the many families we have recently
assisted with the Project Lazarus funds. Thank you.
