14th Sunday in Ordinary Time

FROM OUR PASTOR
Dear St. Charles Parishioners,

I urge you to participate in an education and action seminar presented in Benedict Hall this Sunday afternoon at 2:30pm on the vital topic of affordable housing. The plan to redevelop Buckingham may involve the additional loss of scarce affordable housing for our neighbors. I make my own, the sentiments expressed recently by Bishop Loverde to our County Board;

"I write to you with regard to the proposed redevelopment of Buckingham Estates and the impact this may have on the displacement of lower income residents…In light of the loss of over 40% of the affordable rental units available to lower income people in Arlington since the year 2000, I ask you to exercise all of the capacity of the county to preserve as many as possible of these apartments in the affordable range. By doing so, our county's tradition of hospitality and diversity can be maintained." Sincerely, Paul S. Loverde, Bishop of Arlington.

Let us always make sure that Arlington finds room at the inn.

I hope you take an opportunity to attend one of the Adult Faith summer seminars. Come enliven your faith.

Peace,
Rev. Gerry Creedon

Spirituality at Work: Opportunity or Impossibility?
Presented by Carol O'Neil
We often associate faith with participation at Church, but how does our faith affect our daily lives and our work? How can we integrate our spirituality into our jobs and careers and embrace the call to be authentic disciples at work as well. Carol O'Neil is an Associate Academic Dean at the Georgetown University Law Center and is a parishioner of St. Charles

Thur July 27
"Understanding the Bible: How Catholics Read the Scriptures"
Presented by Dr. Alan Mitchell
Many Catholics get their "dose" of Scripture at Sunday Mass. Our Protestant brothers and sisters can often run circles around us with their knowledge and understanding of the Bible. The Catholic tradition of understanding the Bible is in some ways like but also different from the Protestant tradition. Beginners, longtime Scripture readers, and everyone in between are invited. Dr. Alan Mitchell is an Associate Professor of New Testament and Christian Origins at Georgetown University and is Director of the Annual Institute on Sacred Scripture.

To learn more and find out how you can help save affordable housing at Buckingham, please come to an education and action forum on Sunday, July 9, at 2 pm in Benedict Hall. For further information, contact Dale Dean at 703-528-1554 or deanpd@earthlink.net.

FOOD PANTRY NEEDS
As schools close for summer vacation, many of the children whose families we serve will no longer be receiving free/reduced cost lunches at school. Our food pantry will help to fill some of this void. At the present time, our pantry is especially in need of: cereal, grape jelly, evaporated/powdered milk spaghetti, (regular), small bags of rice, cookies, crackers (snack items for children), Jello/pudding, applesauce, canned fruit and chunky soups. Also, for the homeless population that we serve we are in need of: pop-top cans of tuna, fruit, etc, cereal/granola bars, juice boxes, snacks. We appreciate any food donation that you can make. Thank you.

Please join us Saturday, July 22 at 2:00 pm at St. Jane Frances de Chantal Parish (Caulfield Room at 9701 Old Georgetown Road) in Bethesda, MD, one block south of the beltway interchange.
