Second Sunday of Lent
FROM THE PASTOR
Dear St. Charles Parishioners,
Lent is a season of sacrifice. Many of you have already made sacrifices
to support the Bishop's
Lenten Appeal, our Haiti projects through the very successful Carnaval,
and we continue to share the contributions from our Rice Bowl fasts
to CRS and our Africa project.
There are other ways to sacrifice also. Those who live close to St.
Charles may consider walking or biking to church: to better the environment,
leave parking spaces for others and joining in the ancient practice
of pilgrimage.
You may also want to sacrifice your time. We need Mentor Couples to
accompany our engaged couples. Call John and Margi Barba for more information;
703-728-5316 or email, MBarba7984@aol.com.
We also need more Eucharistic Ministers, especially at the 11am Mass.
Call David at 703-400-9034. We celebrate St. Patrick twice this next
week. I will celebrate a Gaelic Mass on March 13 at 7:30 pm. Buy you
ticket ASAP for our St. Patrick's Party and Dance on March 18.
Dia is Muire Dhibh agus Padraig!
Irish hello: God and Mary and Patrick be with you..
Gerry Creedon

NOT ONLY FOR THE IRISH
Bishop Loverde has declared that Catholics may eat meat on Friday, March

day during the week of March 13-18 to abstain from meat.
LENTEN GUIDELINES FOR FASTING & ABSTINENCE
--Ash Wednesday 3/1 & Good Friday 4/14 are days of fasting (one
normal meal and two smaller ones taken as needed) and abstaining (no
meat)
--All Fridays during Lent are days of abstaining from meat for those

Bishop to follow in Benedict Hall.
EASTER FLOWERS
Easter Flowers are a wonderful way of remembering loved ones. Not only
does your donation provide flowers to the home-bound of our parish during
this special season, it helps to defray the costs of flower supplies
and flowers for special needs all year long. We are now accepting donations
and intentions for Easter Flowers. You may drop your donation, with
the name(s) of the person(s) you are remembering, in the collection
basket during Mass or stop by the Parish Office. Easter Flowers envelopes
have been included with the collection envelopes sent to your home;
however, please feel free to use the envelopes found on the tables at
the Church entrances. Or, if you prefer, a plain enveloped marked "Easter
Flowers" with your name and the name(s) of your loved one(s). Your
support is greatly appreciated.

Prayer & Sacraments

ON THE ROAD TO EASTER
TODAY: At the 9am Mass today we will pray specifically for those
members of our adult initiation community who are already baptized and
who will be received into full communion with the Catholic Church at
Easter through the Sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation.
COMING UP: On the 3rd, 4th, and 5th Sundays of Lent we will
celebrate what are called the Scrutinies with those adults preparing
for baptism, now called the "elect".
The scrutinies are also called "major exorcisms" and are
among the most ancient prayers in the Christian Liturgical tradition.
Dating back as early as the 2nd century, Christian communities would
journey with those chosen for baptism by the laying on of hands and
prayers for protection and deliverance from evil. You are invited to
discern in your own life what needs to be freed from sin's bondage as
we gather in prayer with our "elect".
Each of the Scrutinies concentrates on the Cycle A Scripture readings.
1st Scrutiny will be celebrated at the 9am Mass March 19
Cycle A Readings - Woman at the Well
2nd Scrutiny will be celebrated at the 6pm Mass March 26
Cycle A Readings - Man Born Blind
3rd Scrutiny will be celebrated at the 9am Mass April 2
Cycle A Readings - Raising of Lazarus
You can find all the weekday and Sunday readings, including Cycle A
at www.usccb.org/readings
Please keep all preparing for initiation in your prayers

PROJECT LAZARUS
Some of Jesus' teachings were so difficult for his contemporaries to
accept that he faced the death penalty because of his words. As Catholics
we still have hard lessons to hear and learn. How hard is this one for
you? "In teaching us charity, the Gospel instructs us in the preferential
respect due to the poor and the special situation they have in society:
the more fortunate should renounce some of their rights so as to place
their goods more generously at the service of others." A Call to
Action, #23.
Today the tithe from the fist collection will go to Project Lazarus.
You may also make direct donations to this ministry by boldly printing
For Project Lazarus in the memo line of your check. Please remember
the poor of our community and be generous.
JEWELRY PARTY

asked for an encore

Hall, just before the 5pm evening Mass for your convenience. Come join
