Octave of Christmas: The Blessed Virgin Mary,
The Mother of God
FROM THE PASTOR
Dear St. Charles Parishioners,
"Truth enlightens, it allows one to be reconciled with oneself
and with others, and to be transparent in negotiations and faithful
to one's word" --Pope Benedict
In his
New Year's World Day of Peace Statement, the Pope focuses on the
role truth in peace-making. At a time when the intelligence used to
justify the Iraq war is under scrutiny, some say cherry-picked, others
manipulated, the papal injunctions are timely.
Let us pray for peace, a speedy end to current conflicts, protection
for our troops and for civilian populations especially the children,
increasingly at risk from even the most targeted air fire, and the wisdom
and courage for our leaders to make rights judgments.
Shalom, Salaam, Paz, Peace for the New Year,
Jan 1: Feast of Mary, the Mother of God
Readings: Nm 6:22-27; Gal 4:4-7; Lk 2:16-21
There is much to celebrate today! We celebrate the feast of Mary as
the Mother of God, a solemnity in the Church that is over 1500 years
old. In the Gospel, the shepherds finally find Mary and Joseph and share
what the angels had told them. Today we rejoice with Mary in her role
in the life of our Savior. Until 1969, January 1 also commemorated the
circumcision of Jesus. Today is also the World Day of Prayer for Peace.
We pray for peace and for the courage and faith of Mary. Find the Pope's
message of Peace on our website.
