31st Sunday in Ordinary Time
FROM THE PASTOR
Dear St. Charles Parishioners,
In this season of All Saints and All Souls we remember those who have
gone before us. We celebrate a special Mass of Remembrance on November
2, at 7:30 pm. Please join us.
On November 6 at 7:00 pm in Benedict Hall, the Conversation Series
will focus on "Poetic Reflections on Life and Faith." I will
share some of my personal writing and invite the participants' comments
in light of their own experiences.
A big thank you from the Finance Committee and myself for the 700 plus
members who made a recommitment to stewardship on Commitment
Sunday. If you need a commitment card, call the office or pick one
up at the vestibule, and return it via the collection or at the Parish
Office. We want to make sure everybody is included in this effort!
Saints be praised!
Gerry Creedon

Advocacy
St. Charles Advocacy Committee is designed to encourage and empower
parishioners to contact public officials on matters that advance social
justice. The Committee has organized itself into teams which will follow
issues at the local/regional, state, national, and international levels.
Parishioners are invited to join a Parish e-mail network concentrating
on issues such as welfare, immigrant rights, labor rights, respecting
life, and affordable housing. Contact Dale Dean at 703- 528-1554 or
deanpd@earthlink.net to get
involved. "It is in keeping with their dignity as persons that
human beings should take an active part in government." -Pope John
XXIII, 1963 Peace on Earth.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY: COMMUNITY LIFE MINISTRY
Do you like being helpful to people? Here is an uncomplicated job! St.
Charles would like to be able to staff the desk in the new building
between Masses in order to provide information to parishioners and visitors
trying to find their way around our parish buildings. Six of us have
been paving the way and enjoying it. Shifts are in 1/2-hour increments
-- training will be provided. For more information, contact Mary Jean
at 703-522-0546 or specialac04@yahoo.com.
SENIOR TEA WITH FATHER CREEDON
Are you retired or looking for a way to meet other seniors in the parish?
Please mark your calendar for November 1st when all seniors are invited
to have Tea with Fr. Creedon after the Noon Mass on All Saints Day.
You do not need to be 65 to be considered a senior! We would like to
collect children's books for the victims of Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane
Rita. Please call Norma at 202-531-8189 to let us know if you will be
attending. Or email her at njjcanales@cox.net.
We are excited to plan new group activities to do together.
FEEL THE SPIRT OF ST. CHARLES SCHOOL!
Here's the latest news about our Parish School:
- The School's Development Team painted the cafeteria. Home Depot
donated the paint.
- Band lessons have begun, and the band is looking good!
- Catholic High Schools have begun visiting the eighth grade. Paul
VI and Bishop Ireton have already visited and Bishop O'Connell will
visit at the end of the month.
NO TRICKS--JUST TREATS--ON YOUR PARISH WEBSITE
You're in for a treat when you visit your sweet parish website, www.
StCharlesChurch.org, this week because the site is dressed up with photos
from Oktoberfest. Ring our virtual doorbell for plenty of your favorite
delights, including Fr. Creedon homilies,
the schedule of who's saying which
Mass and the master calendar of all parish
events.
JUST NEIGHBORS
During the month of November we will be presenting a new program "Just
Neighbors" on Wed, Nov 9th & 30th at 7:30-8:30 pm for 1-hour
in the Parish Library. Just Neighbors is an interactive curriculum with
videos and discussions that show us ways we can help our neighbors who
are trapped in poverty and who find that hope is a difficult virtue.
Please call Dan VanBelleghem at (703) 525-4565 for more information.
Registration is free.
ADULT FAITH FORMATION
Advent is coming! Mark your calendars for 2 weekly chances for an hour
retreat from the chaos. Sundays, Nov. 27-Dec. 18 from 10-11 AM or Tuesdays,
Nov. 29-Dec. 20 from 7:30-8:30 PM.
SANTA CLAUS VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Are you a "Santa Claus" looking for a place to spread the
Christmas Spirit? The Arlington Jaycees, a community organization in
Arlington, is looking for volunteers to help at Ballston Common Mall
for the "Photos with Santa" Project. Volunteers are needed
every Saturday from November 26th until December 24th. Weekday volunteers
are also needed from Monday, December 19th until Friday the 23rd. Saturday
and weekday shifts are from 12:00 to 3:00 pm and 3:00 to 6:00 pm. You
can volunteer for one or more shifts. The application deadline is Monday,
October 31st. For more information, please contact Leandra Finder at
571-265-6684 or e-mail to LLFCAP@aol.com.
Pantry Cereal Drive Surpasses Goal
The Cereal Drive to benefit Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC)
during September was a complete success! St. Charles Pantry has shipped
1237 larger than 12-ounce boxes of cereal to AFAC, retaining an additional
125 smaller boxes for use in the regular Pantry bags.
Blessings and thanks to all parishioners for their generous outpouring
while still continuing to stock the shelves of the Pantry with their
regular donations!
Do you know what the St. Charles Project Lazarus does? This outreach
ministry of St. Charles helps the homeless and families on the edge
of homelessness in our community. Sometimes our service is in the form
of "fund raising." This is performed when a family needs more
financial help than we can provide. Our office contacts other local
agencies and together with the other agencies we help the families through
the serious financial situation they face. Other times we pay utility
bills for families whose water or electricity has been cut off. There
are also occasions when we help pay medical bills for families who are
uninsured, working and poor. In all these and many other situations,
the Project Lazarus is a tremendous blessing to many people. Your contributions
to the regular collections make this project possible. On November 13th,
the tithe will be for this very important ministry. Please be as generous
as possible.
