28th Sunday in Ordinary Time

FROM THE PASTOR
Dear St. Charles Parishioners,

"I know how to live in humble circumstances; I know also how to live with abundance."

Today's scriptures follow up on last Sunday's readings that focused on stewardship. As tenant farmers we do not own our gifts, they are a trust from the Lord that are to be used for our own good and the benefit of others. Over 60 people from St. Charles volunteered their time at the Ministries Fair. Over 40,000 dollars were donated to Katrina's victims recently and 1237 boxes of cereal were shared in our drive to assist Arlington's Food Assistance Center. All of these actions testify to the spirit of giving that St. Charles cultivates. The Parish Finance Committee joins me in appreciating your generosity.

This week we give you a report through the mail on our giving to the parish. We seek your ongoing support and ask each of you to reconsider your regular offertory giving in the light of your circumstances.

May we live more simply that others may simple live!

Come and join in our Oktoberfest on October 15.
Rev. Gerry Creedon

FROM OUR PARISH OFFICE…

  • The parish office will be closed Monday, October 10, 2005, in observance of Columbus Day.
  • Remember that on Sunday, October 30, 2005, we "fall back" to standard time. Don't forget to set your clocks back one hour as your "retire" on Saturday night.

NEWLY BAPTIZED
Welcome to the following children who recently entered the faith community through the Sacrament of Baptism: Nicholas Spooner, Viktoria Soriano, Sophia Brown, James Houck, Jordan Ortiz, Grace Varrieur, Victoria Jones, Lesley Canas, Connor Green, Max Kral, Maxwell Julius, Eamon King, Meredith Peterson, Nathaniel Poyser, and Colin Leonard.

PANTRY CEREAL DRIVE SURPASSES GOAL!
The Cereal Drive to benefit Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC) during September was a complete success! St. Charles Pantry has shipped 1237 family size (larger than 12-ounces) boxes of cereal to AFAC! We also retained an additional 125 smaller boxes for use in the regular pantry bags. Blessings and thanks to all parishioners for their generous outpouring while still continuing to stock the shelves of the Pantry with their regular donations.

SPONSOR OF THE WEEK: Our thanks to Brian K. Madden (Bankruptcy attorney) for his support.

MASS OF REMEMBRANCE
St. Charles will hold its annual Mass of Remembrance on November 2, 2005 (Wednesday) at 7:30PM. This is a time when we remember all those in the parish who have died during the past year. It is also a time to pay tribute to all those who have been important in our lives and who have gone before us to live with the Lord. During the Mass, everyone is invited to come forward, announce the name of the person they wish to remember, and light a candle in their honor. Please plan to join us for this special mass and a reception to follow in Benedict Hall.

ALTAR SERVERS There will be training for new altar servers on Sunday, October 16, 2005 at 4:45-5:45 PM in the Sacristy. Interested boys who have made their First Communion should contact Andy or Tricia Samora @ 703-538-2570 or e-mail: arthur.samora@verizon.net.

SENIOR TEA WITH FATHER CREEDON
Are you retired or looking for a way to meet other seniors in the parish? Please mark your calendar for November 1 when all seniors are invited to have Tea with Fr. Creedon after the noon Mass on All Saints Day. You do not need to be 65 to be considered a senior! We would like to collect children's books for the victims of Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita. Please call Norma at 202-531-8189 to let us know if you will be attending. Or email her at njjcanales@cox.net. We are excited to find group activities.

CATHOLIC INQUIRY SESSIONS BEGIN
Many already know of the formation process associated with the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) for those who have made the decision to join the Catholic faith. But what about those who are still deciding or those who just want to learn more about the Catholic Church? Ongoing informal gatherings will be held on Tuesdays at 7:30pm in the Upper Room on the following dates: Oct 18, Nov 8 & 22, and Dec 13. Dates for 2006 will follow. All are welcome. Questions? Call Michelle Miller at the office or rcia@stcharleschurch.org.

JEWELRY PARTY FOR BORROMEO HOUSING
Join youth ministry and Stand True for a Jewelry Party to benefit Borromeo Housing this Sunday, October 9. Find the perfect gift for an upcoming birthday or Christmas. Jewelry will be on display from 7-9 pm in Benedict Hall. Food and drinks will be served as well. We look forward to seeing you this Sunday and thank you for supporting Borromeo Housing.

OKTOBERFEST IS COMING!
Saturday, Oct 15 is Oktoberfest to benefit St. Charles School. Yard Sale begins at 8am. (Bring your yard sale donations to the parish office beginning Sat Oct 8). Oktoberfest dinner is pot-luck celebrating foods from all over the world. Dinner tickets are $10.

"YES, THE PARISH HAS ITS OWN WEBSITE!"
Many Ministries Fair attendees mentioned to the Web Team that they didn't know the parish had its own website. We do and it's a great one so visit www.stcharleschurch.org, to find:

JUST NEIGHBORS
During the month of October we will be presenting a new program "Just Neighbors" on Wed, October 12th & 26th and Nov 9th & 30th at 7:30-8:30 pm for 1-hour in the Parish Library. Just Neighbors is an interactive curriculum with videos and discussions that show us ways we can help our neighbors who are trapped in poverty and who find that hope is a difficult virtue. Please call Dan VanBelleghem at (703) 525-4565 for more information. Registration is free.

PARISH OFFERTORY PROGRAM
As was introduced last week, our parish is in the midst of a 3-week reflection of our personal weekly offertory. This week, a brochure is being mailed to you. This brochure not only contains information regarding the nature of the Parish Offertory Program, it also contains information on the current giving of our parishioners and the income and expense budget of our parish. You are asked to carefully study the brochure and to note the financial giving recommendations that it contains in the context of the Lord's gifts to you and your family. Next weekend, during Mass, you will receive a commitment card and will be asked to indicate your weekly commitment. Regardless of whether you give monthly, quarterly, etc., please indicate on the card the amount that your gifts will represent on a weekly basis. If you have not used the designated parish offertory envelopes or checks in the past, please begin to do so. It is very important for us to know how many members of our parish are actively involved in offering their financial support. Please make a conscious effort to examine your spending priorities, see where our parish is currently placed within them and, then, adjust your priorities as you deem necessary based on our obligation to support the work of the Lord. Thank you for your ongoing prayer and reflection.

LUTHERAN/ANGLICAN/ROMAN CATHOLIC DIALOGUE CONFERENCE
The annual LARC Conference will be held on November 4 - 5 in Lexington, Virginia. This year's topic is "The Embrace of Reconciliation and Peace: The Ecumenical Response to a Violent World." Presenters will include Rev. Dr. Michael Battle, of Virginia Theological Seminary, and Rev. Mpho Tutu, daughter of Archbishop Desmond Tutu. Also, presentations by young adults from all three denominations. For more information, pick up a brochure at one of the church entrances. Registration dues by Oct 22.

INTERFAITH REPRESENTATIVE NEEDED!
St. Charles is a member of the Arlington Interfaith Council, a group that promotes understanding and cooperation among different faiths and supports programs to alleviate suffering and promote justice for Arlington residents. St. Charles needs a representative to attend meetings once a month. Please contact Jenny Holt at 703-501-3082 or jenniferholt74@hotmail.com, if you are interested.
