23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time
FROM THE PASTOR
Dear St. Charles Parishioners,
Last Friday we celebrated a joy-filled retirement party with Jean
Sweeney. She has served as pastoral counselor and staff to our Community
Life Ministries. She has worked for the Church in various ministries
for forty years. We owe her a deep debt of gratitude. Her spirit will
stay with us to inspire us to new efforts.
We are blessed to have Michelle Miller succeed her on the staff. She
has led our RCIA Program and directed
national youth ministry programs. She will serve St. Charles as Director
of Adult Faith Formation and Coordinator of Ministries.
Come join me this Sunday evening at 7:00 PM for a Jewish-Catholic dialogue
with Howard Stein at Benedict Hall. This is the time of year for renewed
commitments. Consider enrolling children and youth
in Religious Education programs. Call Anne Marie if you wish to
volunteer as a catechist.
Remember our food drive to collect 1200 boxes of cereal for the hungry.

BAPTISMAL PREPARATION
Baptismal instruction in English will be offered on Wednesday September
21, at 7:30 PM in Room 103 of the Parish Center. To register, please

JUST NEIGHBORS
Out of every six children in the United States, one is living in poverty.
We are commanded to "love our neighbors as ourselves," but
it isn't always easy to know what our neighbors' needs are or what response
we should make. During the month of October we will be presenting a
new program "Just Neighbors" on Wednesday, October 12th and
26th and November 9th and 30th at 7:30-8:30 PM in the Parish Library.
Just Neighbors is an interactive curriculum with videos and discussions
that show us ways we can help our neighbors who are trapped in poverty
and who find that hope is a difficult virtue. Please save these dates
to learn more about Catholic Social Teaching in these one-hour sessions.
Please call Dan VanBelleghem at (703) 524-4565 for more information.
St. Charles Cursillo Ultreya will be held Saturday, September 10th
in Room 104 of the Parish Center after the 5:00 PM Mass. Please bring
finger foods and beverages and enjoy some time together!
SR. BENEDICT'S BRIGADE NEEDS YOU!
We are looking for (more than) a few men and women to "Live
the Spirit," through participation in "Benedict's Brigade,"
a group named in honor of Sr. Benedict that brings together school parents,
alumni and single and married parishioners to further build community
in the light of Christ by enhancing the ties between them.
There are no fees to join, and membership is entirely voluntary. You
do not need to have children to be involved-just a willingness to support
our school and our students and to share the many achievements of our
children with the parish at large. Those parishioners who are active
participants in events sponsored by the school are especially encouraged
to register.
Benefits of Brigade membership include: advance notice of school activities
and events, including the Oktoberfest, Breakfast with Santa, Polka Party
and other fund-raisers, the opportunity to network with other members
of the Brigade via a free online ListServ and most importantly, the
gratitude of our parish and our school students for your prayers, interest,
care and concern.
To sign up, please report to www.stcharles.k12.va.us.
Click on the "Alumni and B's Brigade" button and complete
the online registration form or call the School office at 703-527-0608.
COLLECTING OLD CELL PHONES
Donate your old cell phones to St. Charles to help support our youth
who will go to Wilmington, NC in July 2006 for Workcamp. There they
will help repair, restore, and weatherize homes for those unable to
do so themselves. Look for boxes at Church entrances or drop off phones
in the Parish Office. Thank you for helping support our teens!
WELCOME RETURNING/INACTIVE
CATHOLICS
If you are a Catholic who has been away from the Church, we invite you
to be an active part of us again. “Landings” is an eight
week discussion series, a safe landing place for returning Catholics
to ask questions and update your faith as an adult. We begin our next
session on Wednesday, September 21. If you are interested, please contact
Anna LaNave at (703) 455-2951 or returning-catholics@stcharleschruch.org
PREGNANT AND NEED HELP? Assistance is just a telephone call
away. Please contact Gabriel Project Arlington at 1-866-444-3553 any
time for a friend who can point you toward the best assistance.
