20th Sunday in Ordinary Time
FROM THE BISHOP
Dear St. Charles Parishioners,
Bishop Paul S. Loverde made the following statement upon learning
of the death of Susan Torres: "Like so many, I have prayed for
the well-being of the baby, for Susan, and for the Torres family. We
rejoice at news of the birth of Susan Anne Catherine Torres. I am deeply
moved by the extraordinary witness to the sacredness of life from its
very beginning which the Torres family has given to our society. We
now mourn the loss of Susan, and bring her and her entire family before
the Lord in prayer."

PLEASE PRAY FOR
Please remember to keep in your prayers those who are sick and those
who suffer, especially: Celia Coronado, Margaret Finocchiaro, William
Frederick, Dorothy Corkery, Gabriela Sotelo, baby Maxwell Julius, John
Colwill, Jeff Craddock, Cissy Denoyer, Eleanor Caudell, Alicia Pohl,
Bernard Pohl, Iluminada Binkley, Marie Lane, Carmen Pena, Vanesa Fuentes,
Anna Nappi, and Tom Eldridge. Let us also pray for those who have died,
especially: Sister Margaret Cook (Sister of Pat Hill), Aura Reyes, and
Marie B. Dolan.
SIMPLE LIVING
In today's busy culture, the constant message to buy things can put
pressure on our time with family and friends, our environment, and our
time with God. If you are interested in finding ways to relieve this
pressure and simplify your life, and meeting others who feel the same,
we will be having an introductory meeting on September 14 at 7:00 PM,
at St. Charles, room TBA. For more information, contact Marisa at acallidryas@gmail.com.
In the United States, 13 million children live in households where
people have to skip meals or eat less to make ends meet. That means
one in ten households in the U.S. are living with hunger or are at risk
of hunger.
Bread for the World tells us we have the means to end hunger throughout
the world. The financial costs to end hunger are relatively slight.
The United Nations Development Program estimates that the basic health
and nutrition needs of the world's poorest people could be met for an
additional $13 billion a year. Animal lovers in the United States and
Europe spend more than that on pet food each year.
Among others, ABC News analysts report that the war in Iraq is costing
over $1 billion per week, and we have already spent well over $100 billion
to finance it. Extending these figures through the end of 2005, we can
say that for more than 9 full years the US alone could have seen to
it that all of the world's poorest people were freed from hunger. Imagine
a decade in a world without hunger. Imagine the rep.
What makes the difference between millions of hungry people and a world
where all are fed? Only a change in priorities. Only the will to end
hunger.
BISHOP O'CONNELL TEEN EXPLORES CAREER IN MEDICINE - NATIONAL YOUTH
LEADERSHIP FORUM OFFERS CAREER INSIGHTS
James David Ingram, a senior at Bishop O'Connell High School and
member of St. Charles Church, recently participated in the National
Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine (NYLF/MED), which took place at Georgetown
University in Washington, DC from July 17 to July 26. Ingram joined
more than 350 other high school students from around the country who
demonstrate academic excellence, leadership potential, and an interest
in a career in medicine. In addition to visits to cutting-edge medical
schools and clinical facilities, Ingram had the opportunity to hear
from and interact with leaders within the medical field. Students had
up-close and personal contact with physicians, surgeons, researchers,
scientists and medical educators as they went behind the scenes to view
these professionals at work. NYLF is a nonprofit, educational organization
that brings various professions to life, empowering outstanding, well-informed
career choices.
