5th Sunday in Ordinary Time
FROM THE PASTOR
This coming Ash Wednesday brings us the Lenten
Season.
The Parish offers a variety of ways for prayer, fasting, spiritual
development, and sacrificing for others.
The Rice Bowl Project invites us to celebrate a lesser meal, offering
the saving to Catholic Relief Services. A portion of the donations will
be reserved by the parish for our new Africa Aids Outreach. I urge families
and households to gather on Fridays, or a day of their choice, for this
Lenten Meal to pray together and to share. On Tuesday evenings we remember
the Year of the Eucharist by celebrating a special Mass at 6:00 in the
Church, followed by Soup Supper at Benedict Hall, concluding with an
exciting series on the "Hungers of the World."
You are also encouraged to join a 6 week faith sharing group.
Finally, let, me suggest a very ancient spiritual discipline: pilgrimage.
At least those members who live near St. Charles are challenged to walk
or bike to Church. This will do great things for body, soul and parking
lot! I am praying for an end of the snow season
to see the crowds
back to Church, and fuller baskets for the needy and the parish's programs!
"May we make of our lives bread shared for the life of the world?"
RULES OF FAST AND ABSTINENCE
Those 14 years of age or older are bound to observe the law of abstinence
(no meat). Those over 18 and under 60 years of age should observe the
law of Fast (one normal meal and two smaller ones). Ash Wednesday and
Good Friday are the only days of Fast and Abstinence. The Fridays of
Lent are days of abstinence.
BAPTISMAL PREPARATION
Baptismal instruction in English will be offered on Tuesday, February
15, at 7:00 PM in the Parish Library. To register, please call the Parish
Office at 703-527-5500.

EUCHARIST ADULT FORMATION
Did you know the Church is celebrating the Year of the Eucharist?
"As two pieces of wax fused together make one, so she or he who
receives Holy Communion is so united with Christ that Christ is in him
and she or he is in Christ." St. Cyril of Alexandria
In this year of the Eucharist, Christians ought to be committed to
bearing more forceful witness to God's presence in the world. (26) The
Eucharist is not merely an expression of communion in the church's life;
it is also a project of solidarity for all humanity. The Christian who
takes part in the Eucharist learns to become a promoter of communion,
peace and solidarity in every situation. (27) Pope John Paul II, "Stay
With Us Lord"
"May we make of our lives bread shared for the life of the world?"
