Bulletin for August 1, 2004

18th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear St. Charles Parishioners,

Today our scriptures could help us reflect on our use of money and our riches. How do we share what we have? Have consumerism and materialism become our false idols? It is something each of us can wrestle with. Am I building a kingdom for myself or in the service of others? Let summer retreat time give you space to think about your attitudes towards possessions and "put on a new man (woman), one who grows in knowledge as he is formed anew in the image of his Creator". (reading II). And don't forget to keep on supporting your parish ministries at St. Charles.

We need you.

BAPTISMAL PREPARATION
Baptismal instruction in English will be offered on Tuesday August 17, at 7:00 PM in the Parish Library. To register, please call the Parish Office at 703-527-5500.

OUR LADY OF PIAT MASS IN ST. CHARLES
Most Rev. Diosdado A. Talamayan, D.D., Archbishop of Tuguegarao, Philippines will celebrate Mass and healing services on August 7 (Saturday) at 1 PM at St. Charles Borromeo Church. He intends to spread devotion to "Our Lady of Piat," a canonically crowned image of the Blessed Virgin Mary, enshrined in a minor Basilica in Piat, Cagayan Valley. Social hour will be at Benedict hall.

STRESS-PROOF YOUR FAMILY
Go on a Worldwide Marriage Encounter weekend! Marriage Encounter is 44 hours where married couples can get away from the jobs, kids, chores and phones-and focus only on each other. If you'd like greater depth, growth and enrichment in your relationship, you'll like the difference a Worldwide Marriage Encounter weekend can make! The next Arlington Diocese weekends are September 24-26, 2004 and November 12-14, 2004. For more information and to register, contact John and Loretta Scali at (703) 631-5289, or by email at marriageencounter@cox.net.

RESPECT LIFE MINISTRY
"Failing to protect the lives of innocent and defenseless members of the human race is to sin against justice. Those who formulate law therefore have an obligation in conscience to work toward correcting morally defective laws, lest they be guilty of cooperating in evil and in sinning against the common good."-USCCB "Catholics in Political Life."

"ABORTION." Is this word a part of your past? Are you in need of some deep spiritual healing? If so, call Maryanne at 703-841-2504 or projectrachel@arlingtondiocese.org

HELP NEEDED/YOUTH MINISTRY
Is the Holy Spirit calling you to share your faith with teens? If so, consider teaching Confirmation classes to young people enrolled in our youth ministry programs. For more information on volunteering for this important ministry, contact Anne Marie at 703-527-5500, x119 or akaufmann@stcharleschurch.org.

HELP NEEDED/RELIGIOUS EDUCATION FOR CHILDREN
St. Charles' Sunday morning religious education classes need a few more adults to serve as catechists. If you love children and wish to help them grow closer to God and learn more about their Catholic faith, please consider volunteering as a catechist this coming year. For more information, contact Anne Marie at 703-527-5500, x 119 or akaufmann@stcharleschurch.org. We have a particular need for those who enjoy working with preschool aged children.

IN OUR PARISH

If you have found an item that you believe someone has left behind or if you have lost something important to you, check with the Parish Office. We have many items from sweaters and house keys to umbrellas.

CATHOLIC SUMMER READING RECOMMENDATIONS
Visit your parish website, www.stcharleschurch.org, this week for Catholic summer reading recommendations from fellow parishioners. You can even share your own suggestions of favorite books. And with August starting, you may also want to see this month's celebrant's schedule of which priest is saying which Mass, along with Parish Council's recommended events for August. Keep connected to St. Charles all summer long by taking part in your online Catholic community.

WHEN SOLIDARITY PAYS OFF
On behalf of the family of Joseph and Mi-Choong O' Brien, Mary Kane, Joseph's sister, thanks St. Charles for prayers and support with the petition for her sister-in-law's release form detention and near deportation. They are grateful for all St. Charles did during what could only be described as a nightmare for the family. She says, "The people of this parish kept my brother strong enough to keep going. There are still some hurdles with regard to Mi-Choong's case but at least after so many months she is back home with Joe and her children." There are many others who have nowhere to turn, swallowed up in a system where many are forgotten and deported. Let us not forget our brothers in Christ. Mary declares, "Thank you again and I look forward to being part of…your efforts toward social justice."
