Bulletin for August 3, 2003

18th Sunday in Ordinary Time

SCRIPTURE FOCUS
Jesus had just fed the Israelites of his day with "bread from heaven," but they saw only the "bread." They followed him back across the lake to Capernaum. They were hoping for more free food. Jesus uses their question to try to teach them the deeper meaning of the "bread from heaven." He reproaches them for being so concerned about food.
They have missed the meaning of the feeding. They do not see this as a "sign" pointing to a deeper reality. When they ask what they must do to perform works pleasing to God, Jesus says, in effect, "nothing." They are asked simply to accept him as the one God has sent. This faith is a free gift of God. The mention of faith makes them impatient. They want action. The crowd is operating on the material level. They are hoping for an endless supply of food. Jesus startles them by saying he is bread which gives life. They must believe in him. He will satisfy them forever.

SOCIAL JUSTICE NEWS
BRING GOD'S LOVE TO HAITI
"My name is Marie, and I am from Haiti. We have the second highest HIV/AIDS infection rate in the world. More than half of the people are undernourished, but less than half…have access to safe drinking water. Haiti is committed to education, with 80 percent of our children enrolled in primary schools. My country received about $208 million in development assistance in 2000." In Mozambique, where statistics for malnutrition, drinking water safety, AIDS, and quality of education are all lower, they receive $875 million per year in such aid. (Bread for the World, 2003) BECOME A HAITI GODPARENT THIS WEEKEND.

RESPECT LIFE MINISTRY
For all who work to protect the right to life of every human being: that they might live in the joyful knowledge of the goodness of God which shines forth through them; We pray to the Lord:

IN OUR PARISH

ROOTED IN FAITH FORWARD IN HOPE
The parish has exceeded its Rooted in Faith - Forward in Hope campaign goal of $2.2 million, and we are truly grateful for your support.

For those who are still considering a gift, remember that every penny that you contribute now to the Rooted in Faith - Forward in Hope campaign will go directly to St. Charles. Any additional dollars will be used toward several initiatives that have been identified in recent months which are currently unfunded, including (1) repair and resurfacing of the entire parking lot; (2) relandscape around the church and school to complement the new plantings at the parish center; (3) computer lab in the parish center.

KEEP CONNECTED TO COMMUNITY OVER THE SUMMER
You can keep connected to your parish community during the summer through your parish website, stcharleschurch.org. Whether you're on vacation or just on the go, your parish website can keep you informed of the latest parish news, volunteer opportunities, and pictures from parish events. If you're new to the area, the site can help you get acquainted with what our parish has to offer-plus there's a home blessing section, too. Take part in your parish's vibrant, online community and praise Jesus!

LITURGY OF THE WORD WITH CHILDREN
Liturgy of the World with Children needs your help at the 9:00 AM Mass. This ministry gives children the opportunity to gather together during Mass to talk about the reading and Gospel.
