Dear St. Charles Parishioners:
This coming Wednesday, Ash Wednesday, we celebrate the beginning of
Lent.
Our Lenten small groups will meet in our Neighborhoods to share the
scripture and to grow in faith. Our Neighborhoods will also provide
Lenten gathering and opportunities to reach out. On Tuesday evenings
you are invited to the Cafeteria for Soup Supper followed by presentations
on Life Issues. We will provide an extra Mass at noon on Wednesday (Only)
as well as Stations of the Cross in English (Thursdays) and Spanish
(Fridays). You are asked by Bishop Loverde to pray for peace, and for
alternatives to war.

Dance March 15!
With Lenten blessings,
PARKING UPDATE
Please cooperate with our parking lot attendants
and ushers as they are trying to accommodate EVERYONE! We ask you for
patience as our community center construction continues. Please note
that Parking at Midas is Limited to Sunday Only! Midas will tow if you
park at any other time!
We are also asking for volunteers to help direct traffic in the parking
lot. Please call Marvin Mayorga at the Parish Office. Thank you!
RULES OF FAST AND ABSTINENCE
Those 14 years of age or older are bound to observe the law of abstinence
(no meat). Those over 18 and under 60 years of age should observe the
law of Fast (one normal meal and two smaller ones). Ash Wednesday and
Good Friday are the only days of Fast and Abstinence. The Fridays of
Lent are days of abstinence.
NEIGHBORHOOD E
Neighborhood E's Lenten Activity
is an "Evening of Sacrifice." We will gather together at Clarendon
House to prepare and serve an evening meal to homeless families and
residents of Arlington who suffer from mental illness. Your help is
needed. If you reside in Neighborhood E, please call Jan Macdonald (703-524-0238)

SOCIAL JUSTICE NEWS
A BETTER LIFE FOR WORKERS
On behalf of the Arlington Living Wage Campaign and myself, I would
like to thank the St. Charles community, and Cathleen O'Brien especially,
for your strong support for the Living wage. We gathered about 350 signatures,
giving this petition drive a strong boost. As you may know, we are asking
that the Arlington County Board provide the funding for a Living Wage
in FY 2004. We will continue to gather signatures, as well as to speak
at County Board meetings and at the important County Budget hearing
on March 25. Please consider speaking at one of these meetings or being
part of our support group. To help out, call Mary Rouleau at 703-527-1063

RESPECT LIFE MINISTRY
For all Bishops: that their love for the sheep whom the world has forgotten
might strengthen and form us; We pray to the Lord.
SHROVE TUESDAY PANCAKE SUPPER
MARCH 4TH
On Shrove Tuesday, March 4th, there will be a Pancake Supper in the
School Cafeteria from 5:45 to 8:00 PM. Large Supper is $6.00, Small
Supper is $4.00. You may pay at the door. Information flyers are at
the exits of the Church.
ST. PATRICK'S DAY CELEBRATION
St. Charles will have a Special Mass honoring St. Patrick on Saturday,
March 15 at 5:00 PM. Our annual St. Patrick's Day celebration featuring
a corned-beef and cabbage dinner, Irish dancers, and our own Irish balladeer
Fr. Gerry Creedon will take place in the School Cafeteria at 6:00 PM
following Mass. We sell out, so by your ticket in the Cafeteria after
Mass soon. No tickets will be sold at the door.
RCIA RITE OF SENDING - NEXT SUNDAY
Next Sunday, March 9, at the 9 AM Mass, St. Charles will celebrate the
Rite of Sending for our catechumens and baptized candidates. We have
been praying for them during the intercessions and when they are dismissed
weekly after the homily. The community has discerned their readiness
for reception of the initiation sacraments this Easter. After the rite
is celebrated here in the morning, these catechumens and candidates
will be sent to the bishop for the afternoon "Rite of Election"
(for the candidates). Based on the testimony given by the sponsors,
godparents and the parish, Bishop Loverde will declare the catechumens
to be elect, chosen by God for the sacraments this Easter. He will also
recognize the desire of the baptized candidates for the sacraments of
Confirmation and Eucharist within the Catholic community. Please join
us next Sunday as we celebrate what God has done and is doing in the
lives of our catechumens and candidates.
WEB TEAM MEETS THIS TUESDAY
The parish website, www.stcharleschurch.org is brought to you by a group

recent changes. Please join us if you'd like to help spread the Good
News online. Web programmers are needed in particular. And remember
to visit the site this week to find out all the options you have for
Lent at St. Charles, whether this is your
