St. Charles Bulletin for November
3, 2002
31st Sunday in Ordinary Time
[Bulletin included an Adult Education
flyer]

Dear St. Charles Parishioners:
Saints be praised. This weekend we celebrate all Saints, all Souls and
our Patron St. Charles Borromeo,
November 1, 2 and 4.
A special Mass of Remembrance will be offered on Monday November 4th
at 7:30 for our own recently deceased loved ones. Come join us. Blessed
are those who mourn.
I will also offer a dialogue on Sunday, November 17 at 7:00 PM in the
Conversations with Creedon Series
on the topic, "Dealing with Grief: lessons learned." This will
give me a chance to share some poetic and faith expressions that have
helped me in my mother's passing.
I also urge you to attend our Adult Ed series on the topic of "Conscience."
It is offered by one of the finest priests and theologians in our diocese,
Fr. Tom Ferguson. He assists with the Marriage Tribunal as well as serving
as pastor of St. Bernadette.
A big thank you for all the volunteers who have come forward. In addition
to additional needs identified in today's bulletin, we need some helpers
for the Parking Lot. Call the Office,
"Blessed are the peace-makers"
THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP & PATIENCE
Please cooperate with our parking lot attendants and ushers as they are
trying to accommodate EVERYONE! We ask you for patience as our community
center construction continues. We are also asking for volunteers to help
direct traffic in the parking lot. Please call Marvin Mayorga at the Parish
Office. Thank you!

SOCIAL JUSTICE NEWS
STREET CHILDREN PROJECT
The Phillipine Medical Mission thanks St. Charles Parish for the tithes
received, which will sustain funding to a children's outreach project
in Manila. Through the project, Manilan street children are learning to
give each other basic health and safety education, in a country that does
not provide what would here be standard children's services. There are
80,000 children in Manila alone, living on the streets. This project is
our collaboration with child hope Asia Phillippines (CHAP), and we ask
for your continued prayers for those of all ages in the nation. For more
information, visit pmm.stcharleschurch.org.(This
is not www.pmm.stcharleschurch.org, as mistakenly printed in the paper
version of the bulletin.)
SPONSOR OF THE WEEK: Our thanks to THE CATHOLIC SHOP FOR THEIR SUPPORT.
RESPECT LIFE MINISTRY
That by our service to the weakest and most forgotten, we might conform
ourselves to the model of Christ who humbled himself for the salvation
of the world; we pray to the Lord:

ECUMENICAL EVENT
The annual Lutheran, Anglican, Roman Catholic (LARC) Conference will be
held at Roanoke College in Salem, Virginia, on November 22 and 23, to
promote and celebrate the cause of Christian Unity. Our presenters will
be our own bishops who will speak on Equipping our Young Adults for Christian
Unity. Catholic youth in high school, colleges and universities in Virginia,
and those young adults in the work place, are urged to attend and share
the experience and friendship with youth from other denominations. Those
from our parish who wish to attend the LARC Conference at Salem will find
it a mind-opening experience. Arrangement for transportation in our parish
van to Salem & back is under consideration. Over night accommodations
will be provided by local host families. Those interested should inform
Youth Minister, Anne Marie Kaufmann at the Parish Office and/or John &
Sylvia Team at 703-841-1114.
PRIMACY OF CONSCIENCE
Do you know the teaching of the Church regarding the Primacy of Conscience?
When properly formed, your conscience must guide your actions. If you
are interested in learning more, Father Thomas Ferguson, administrator
of St. Bernadette Church, will address the Church's teaching on conscience
formation and making personal decisions on moral matters. A question and
answer session will follow.
WHERE: ST. CHARLES CHURCH
WHEN: MONDAY, NOVEMBER 11, AT 7:30 PM.
RESPECT LIFE COMMITTEE MEETING
If you would like to get involved with pro-life activities, come to the
Respect Life Committee meeting on Tuesday, November 12th at 7:30 PM in
the Memorial Room. We will discuss the upcoming March for Life January
22nd 2003. We also want to plan other events, and discuss our goals for
the coming year. For more information contact Becky Geiger at 703-524-4658.

PARISH COMMUNITY CENTER NEWS
PARISH COUNCIL NEWS
The St. Charles Parish Council will convene on Wednesday, November 6,
2002, at 7:30 PM in the Parish Library. In the event that they cannot
attend, Parish Council members are asked to identify an alternate as it
is very important that all ministries and neighborhoods are represented
at this session. Further, each Parish Council Representative is reminded
to come to this meeting prepared to report on the specific action undertaking
by his/her ministry or neighborhood to follow up with parishioners who
volunteered at the recent Ministries Fair.
INTERFAITH COMMITTEE OPPORTUNITY
Encouraged by the highly positive response to the "Darkness to Light:
An Interfaith Prayer Service
of Peace and Hope," held at St. Charles on September 11, the members
of the Interfaith Planning Committee, who represent several faith communities
in our area, are discussing plans for further programs, which may include
educational/lecture series, open houses at worship places and additional
interfaith prayer services, such as one to commemorate Martin Luther King
Day. Parishioners interested in joining this interfaith committee are
invited to call Dennis Warner at 703-532-4571 email: dbwealth1@aol.com
or Carolyn Gretzinger at 703-243-5653 email: cmgretz@aol.com. Those of
us involved with the September 11 effort not only enjoyed planning the
prayer service but also experienced a wonderful sense of fellowship with
our colleagues from the various faith communities.
We hope that you will join us!
